do you know what really effectively reduces the number of people experiencing houselessness and mental health crises? consensual, quality and free/affordable healthcare access and infrastucture, universal basic income and infrastructure and meaningful investments in housing. in the first three years following medicaid expansion (which made behavioral/ health accessible to poor and low-income people) reduced arrests by 20-32%. in denver, providing supportive housing for people with repeat criminal legal system contact led to a 40% decrease in arrests.

this is such cruel, horrible policy. of course for the human rights abuse and the forcible disappearing of largely homeless people but the additional wholly unnecessary stress on the medical system which, in case you haven't noticed, IS FIGHTING FOR IT'S LIFE can't be overlooked. NYC is in desperate need of housing, access to quality healthcare (including mental healthcare), poverty eradication and to offer instead more cops with more discretion to round "undesirable" folks up and detain them should be called what it is: fascistic.

marijuana's schedule 1 classification historically led to grossly harsh penalties (incarceration, fines & collateral consequences) for the disproportionately Black folks prosecuted for possessing, manufacturing or distributing (even as many yts used without consequence). to pardon all prior federal possession offenses, push governors to do the same on the state level and push for reclassification of marijuana feels significant even though marijuana should always have been the low hanging fruit.

i don't care how famous or powerful you are, if you ever come for a karefa-johnson we will do everything in our collective, ancestral powers (and baby we are POWERFUL) to let you know exactly how fucked up you got us. this isn't the kardashians, boo boo. Gabriella has been a shining light in an industry built to supress and marginalize and pathologize people like her for over a decade. She has overcome endless bullshit and racism and bigotry simply because of the undeniable blunt force of her talent, intellect & star power.

(hella long) THREAD on #bailreform & #PoliceViolence
Here’s the deal: last year NY passed bail reform legislation that mandated pretrial freedom for 90% of folks going through the system. It was a huge win for black people, poor people & the movement to end pretrial jailing. It also SIGNIFICANTLY checked the power of law enforcement to use pretrial jailing as a tool to terrorize black NYers. The reforms meant that tens of thousands of people now couldn’t be jailed and held hostage just based on an arrest.
