Today's Ohio #BlackHistory 🧵

Cleveland's own Garrett Morgan, a prolific African-American inventor.

Most known for inventing the gas mask and traffic signal, and his heroic role in saving the lives of workers trapped underground. In 1916, Cleveland workers drilling a tunnel under Lake Erie became trapped in toxic fumes following a huge gas explosion.

After two previous failed rescue attempts, Mr. Morgan and his brother stepped in, using his gas masks to rescue two workers and recover four bodies.

Here's a thread of everything Trump, McConnell, and Senate Republicans should be doing to help Americans get through this pandemic -

INSTEAD of jamming through a Supreme Court nomination. Rent relief.

Families are being kicked out of their homes during a pandemic.

Rent relief has been sitting on McConnell's desk for 5 months. #RentReliefNow

⚠ THREAD -

We need to make it as easy as possible for Ohioans to cast their ballot SAFELY this November.

But Republicans are only making it harder for you to vote. My colleagues and I called on Ohio Secretary of State LaRose to support providing more than one secure ballot drop box in each county.

Instead, he tried to block them.

THREAD: If you don't believe it's within President Trump's character to denigrate the men and women of our armed forces,

you haven't been paying attention to the last four years.👇
theatlantic.com/politics/archi… President Trump called Senator John McCain, an American war hero, a "loser".

He said, "I like people who weren't captured.

We're five months into a health and economic crisis. 18 million are out of work.

But instead of sending another stimulus check, or doing ANYTHING to help people pay their rent and bills -

The White House is telling workers to #FindSomethingNew.

That's it. That's their plan. Thinking workers want another AD CAMPAIGN instead of pay and protections is the definition of out-of-touch.

Switching careers is not like picking a new show on Netflix.

THREAD: Judy Shelton's views are so dangerous, even principled conservatives are OPPOSED to her nomination.

"Shelton’s views on monetary policy are far outside the mainstream. Too far.

In his Mount Rushmore speech, President Trump declared that people who disagree with him want to "destroy the very civilization that rescued billions from poverty, disease, violence, and hunger".

No, Mr. President. It's clear who's destroying the legacy of America's leadership. It's the President who today withdrew the U.S. from the WHO, an organization dedicated to improving the health of people worldwide.

It's the President who eliminated the White House global pandemic response team and failed to protect Americans from the coronavirus.

From the beginning, my priority was to get help directly to Ohioans. Now after hard-fought negotiations, this bill does that.

It's not perfect, but we've made this a better deal for workers, hospitals, and our communities.

brown.senate.gov/newsroom/press… As part of our negotiations, we've ensured that:

- billions in resources are going to our hospitals and health care systems immediately
- unemployment insurance is expanded
- cities and counties get the funding they need
- people won't be thrown out of their homes

Ten years ago today, President Obama signed the #AffordableCareAct into law.

Let’s take a moment to think about how the comprehensive, quality health coverage provided by the #ACA is helping us combat the coronavirus. Without the #ACA, health insurers could discriminate against or even refuse coverage to nearly 133 million Americans with pre-existing conditions - one of the groups most likely to develop severe symptoms of the coronavirus.

Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans had an opportunity to draft a bipartisan relief package that would help the people suffering the most - workers and their families. Instead, they’re doing what they did in 2008 and 2009: giving Wall Street a blank check with taxpayer money. Our plan should put cash in people's hands, expand tax credits for families, halt evictions and foreclosures, provide rental and mortgage assistance, and support our frontline health care providers.

Randomly calling out companies is not a plan. We need leadership.

I have a plan to mobilize American manufacturing to combat the shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) and medical equipment and fight the spread of this virus.

See below:

brown.senate.gov/newsroom/press… Any military stockpiles of PPE and medical devices not yet distributed should be deployed to communities across the country ASAP.

No health care worker should have to ration masks or gowns while those items sit in government storage.

When times are tough, we pull together. For many, that’ll mean a lot of time at home for the next few weeks.

How do you plan to pass the time? Let’s hear what’s on your watch list and reading list.

I’m going to start a little thread of my own: American Factory (2019): The story of factory workers in Moraine, Ohio and corporations’ union-busting tactics.

Made by Dayton’s Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar. Watch it on Netflix.

An independent Federal Reserve keeps our economy more stable for families and businesses, but President Trump's nominee doesn't believe in an independent Fed. Instead, Judy Shelton has spent her entire career advocating for policies that would make our economy more volatile. Ms. Shelton is so far off the ideological spectrum that even several of my Republican colleagues expressed their concern with her ideas - like replacing the dollar with a global currency and returning the U.S. to the gold standard.

WATCH LIVE: Sherrod rolls out plan to curb stock buybacks, create worker dividend.

press.org/events/npc-hea… Today I’m introducing a plan that would ensure workers share in the profits they create.

For every $1 million passed on to shareholders in the form of stock buybacks or increased dividends, corporations will have to pass on $1 to every worker. I’m calling it a #WorkerDividend.

During yesterday’s visit to the border, @ConnieSchultz and I witnessed the inhumanity and coldness of President Trump’s family separation policy. We also saw the generosity and kindness of volunteers who represent the best of our American values... ImageImageImageImage ...and the innocence of children who find joy in play despite what they’ve been through. Throughout the day, Matthew 25 was on my mind. I’ve read many translations and not a single one that said, “I was a stranger and you welcomed me, but only if I had the proper paperwork.”

Connie and I were devastated to learn of the destruction these tornadoes caused in Dayton and across western Ohio. Our hearts ache for the family who lost someone and to those who suffered injuries. We are so grateful to the first responders who worked throughout the night, and we know many have skipped sleep and meals in order to immediately turn to the task of recovery today.
