We agree with @ggreenwald that “there’s almost nothing worse you can do if you’re participating in public discourse than to deliberately and casually smear somebody while knowing that you have no evidence.” greenwald.substack.com/p/an-ugly-war-… (11:44) Thread. /1 We’re grateful to @ryangrim and @theintercept for debunking the various accusations made towards me by Dem operatives who I hired before the 2020 primary and replaced after winning it.

Several journalists wrote hit pieces in 2020 that protected the Democratic establishment from the strongest challenge Pelosi has ever faced.

Each story suppressed whistleblowers, and ignored evidence, to ultimately publish election disinformation.

Truth deserves to be heard. /1 We now make public a memo explaining a litany of factual errors and ethical failures that we shared with @theintercept last summer. shahidforchange.us/correction-aug…

It prompted revisions to the story, then an entirely new one, but it took two months to investigate *after* publication. /2

I went live on Instagram earlier today to explain my thoughts about the Squad and the debate over how @AOC & the Squad can best press for #MedicareforAll.

Thread. /1 Of course @Instagram blocked me from saving the live session to our story—for supposed copyright violations, of all things.

Yay corporate content moderation! Who needs censorship anymore?

But I digress.... /2

We’re grateful for all the support that made our 2020 campaign the most successful effort over the past 30 years to win San Francisco a new voice in Congress.

We’re excited to reflect on our momentum as we look ahead to 2022. Thread. /1 The 81,000 votes we won in the November 2020 general election were the most by any challenger to the sitting Speaker of the House in her 30 year career as a Member of Congress. sfelections.sfgov.org/november-3-202…

We exceeded the previous record by over 25%. /2

The corruption of this administration is rivaled only by its mendacity.

But don’t pretend that the problem is partisan.

How has Trump gotten away with such notorious serial fraud?

Democrats—led by @SpeakerPelosi—have played a key role enabling him. Thread. /1 Executive accountability:

Pelosi refused to allow corruption to be included in the Articles of Impeachment that she delayed for a year before finally proceeding—with a process limited to a single charge, which happened to be least likely to sway Senate votes. /2

I grew up in rural Missouri, as part of the only immigrant family within 11 miles in any direction—but the worst racism I’ve ever encountered was in 2020, right here in the proud progressive bastion of San Francisco. Thread. /1 The institutional racism & Islamophobia that our campaign has encountered from the San Francisco press—and even self-described progressives and socialists—has been alarming to me. Sadly, it has longstanding roots. /2

We are strapping in now to live tweet tonight’s vice presidential debate.

Here’s our thread from last week’s presidential debate.

We hope tonight’s debate proves more insightful! And...we’re underway!

You can watch tonight’s debate on @cspan at c-span.org/debates/

By what do *you* expect to grow outraged this evening?

(FWIW we send our best to @KamalaHarris and—despite our differences—hope that she hands Pence his behind on a plate)

It took them long enough!

I’ve argued for years in favor of stronger antitrust enforcement—and spelled out a few ways to make it happen. eff.org/deeplinks/2019… One of the most important things Congress could do when legislating new antitrust laws is to statutorily enshrine—and expand—the essential facilities doctrine.

It was judicially created to constrain monopolies, but has fallen out of favor as the right wing took over our courts.

A former acquaintance recently provided a statement on Twitter regarding sexual harassment.

These claims are false.

Every survivor must be heard, and I hope to be allowed the same opportunity to be heard as well. /1 Sexual harassment is despicable. Those who exploit structural sexism and power imbalances must be exposed.

I am committed to putting survivors’ interests first, before my own. /2

My policy agenda starts with limiting institutional power wherever it emerges—whether in a government agency or a corporate industry—to defend the rights of individuals & communities.

We've explained many times how my concerns include tech companies. Thread. /1 Palantir is among the worst corporate citizens of Silicon Valley. The company's business model is inextricably intertwined with intelligence agencies, and profits from the fraud & corruption that I aim to end once I reach Congress. /2

I will never criticize Bernie, if only because he’s done more for working-class Americans and the future than any American in a generation.

But I agree with @J_ManPrime21 that political heroes are never the answer. #NotMeUs means many things worth examining. Thread. /1 #NotMeUs reflects our constitutional principle of popular sovereignty.

Candidates don’t win or lose elections.

*Volunteers and movements* win or lose elections, with candidates serving as sails through which supporters combine energy.

That also has further implications. /2

Today, @buzzfeed noted that some anti-surveillance advocates would consider embracing invasive measures imposed to protect public health. buzzfeednews.com/article/rosieg…

Here’s how to keep those measures from becoming yet another executive power grab. Thread. /1 First, several provisions of the odious & unconstitutional Patriot Act have expired as scheduled, and the sky has not fallen in.

Policymakers—including Nancy Pelosi—who have repeatedly clamored for extensions should be ashamed. commondreams.org/views/2018/01/… /2

We’re not able to go knock on doors at the moment so we've been calling our neighbors to check in, to see if they need any support, and if they are aware of the support that's available.

We had some heart-warming chats w/neighbors & wanted to share some highlights.

One person we spoke with told us they danced in their living rooms to 60s soul music last night.

Another person told us they are out of work. They are an events manager & waiting for state aid. They are hoping it will come thru soon.

We did it!!

For 30+ yrs, Pelosi’s corporate fundraising machine protected her from a Democratic challenger.

Tonight, WE changed that.

In November, the Speaker will face a serious challenge from a campaign that’s already raised over $540,000 from more than 13,000 donors. With Bernie taking an impressive victory in San Francisco and across the State, the writing is on the wall.

AND we have eight months to go head to head! Nancy Pelosi has never had to face a formidable progressive challenger.

Pelosi’s dragging Trump for his intel nominee lacking experience. She’s correct, but her complaint obscures two revealing ironies that most journalists will predictably overlook. /1 First, the “experience” that Pelosi values has historically included human rights violations.

Contrary to confused depictions of Pelosi as a “liberal,” she’s an architect of NSA mass surveillance, and also helped the continuing cover-up of CIA torture. factcheck.org/2009/05/pelosi… /2

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is a national hero but remains underappreciated. Beyond his civil rights legacy, he warned us about the climate crisis, while his voice prompted state suppression long before most Americans grew to fear fascism. #ReclaimMLK Thread. /1 We pride ourselves on First Amendment freedoms, but King was mercilessly & relentlessly vilified by the FBI. Our criminal President brags about our idiotic military spending.

The military industrial complex poses as great a threat to our Republic as the kleptocrat in the White House, or the disturbing deference of corporate Democrats to authoritarianism.

#NoWar The threat to our rights transcends the White House. Corporate Democrats have been demonstrably complicit in militarism and the rise of authoritarianism.

@SpeakerPelosi, in particular, paved Trump's road to war by blocking congressional attempts to restrain him.

Make no mistake: the GOP is not a "conservative" party.

It is a party led by a fascist plotting an ongoing assault on our Republic.

Pelosi claims credit for an impeachment process that she:

🧐 refused to initiate for nearly a year, costing lives and sacrificing families, and then
🤫 limited to excuse the President's self-enrichment at public expense, inviting future corruption. /2

Pelosi wants credit for showing up late for impeachment, and excluding the President's corruption and misappropriation of public funds.

The limited process she has allowed reflects multiple failures of leadership. Thread. /1 Why not include Emoluments violations?

Maybe because corruption in Washington is (unacceptably) bipartisan.

Trump's invitation of foreign interference is indeed illegal.

Biden's family profiting from his career may not be illegal, but it should be. nbcnews.com/politics/trump… /2

I’m committed to supporting Bernie. That’s why I’m disappointed to witness attacks between some supporters of @BernieSanders and @ewarren. We can advance the movement by following their leads and embracing potential allies rather than attacking them. Thread. /1 @BernieSanders @ewarren We should respect the strategy demonstrated by both Bernie and Liz to stand together against centrists, instead of tearing out each other’s throats before the primary. They’ve consistently declined opportunities to attack each other in the debates. /2
