There are two major problems with this analysis.
The first is that Trump is a unique figure who can command and control the non-populists in the Republican party. It's unlikely that anyone else in the populist wing could do so.
Perhaps the populists believe that if they get the non-populists to follow Trumps line loud enough that they'd never be able to flip-flop from the position the has previously flip-flopped from? Maybe for some, but overall doubtful.
