Stop 8: Northern Namibia! 🇳🇦🦏

Leaving Botswana we headed into Namibia and spent a few days driving towards Etosha National Park!

It was great to see different parts of this beautiful country, and also see some animals we’ve not seen anywhere else! Image During the journey we stopped at Windhoek and Waterberg Plateau, which were both really nice spots with some great hiking trails!

One of our camps had Pumbas running around causing havoc 😅

Hallo!

Have been having a break from Twitter, but I'm back now and wanted to share some pictures from a trip I took around Norway recently! 🇳🇴

It was a cruise from Southampton, up to the North Cape and back over the course of about two weeks.

The first stop was Haugesund. The weather was perfect, and it almost felt like I was out in the Inner Hebrides!

After three years, and 800 updates, today marks the final time I'll be updating the Scotland Coronavirus Tracker.

Thank you so much to everyone for all of the support and encouragement over that time. Being able to run this page for so long has been the honour of my life 🥹 The data, of course, will still be released.

The 'Weekly national respiratory infection and COVID-19 statistical report' from PHS includes most of the data for Scotland on it.

On the page below you can view the figures in a report, or on a dashboard.

This week, the UK has reported:

🔵 8,858 new cases (down 20%)
🔴 367 new deaths (down 31%)
🟡 4,201 hospital inpatients (down 14%)
🟠 95 ICU/Ventilation inpatients (down 10%)

#Covid19UK #coronavirusuk ImageImageImageImage Here are some additional case figures!

Reported case rates are still mostly falling throughout the UK, and across the planet as a whole. Although of course, a large part of that is due to a reduction in testing. ImageImageImageImage

This week, Scotland has reported:

🔵 606 new cases (down 27%)
🔴 30 new deaths (down 33%)
🟡 207 hospital inpatients (down 26%)
🟠 2 ICU inpatients

#covid19scotland #coronavirusscotland ImageImageImageImage So another drop in reported cases!

We're actually averaging under 100 new cases a day now, for the first time since August 2020! Although of course that is largely a result of low testing levels. ImageImageImageImage

From the Coronavirus Infection Survey, the estimated number of people in each nation who had Covid-19 during the latest week was:

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 England: 1 in 40
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Scotland: 1 in 40
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Wales: 1 in 40
🍀 Northern Ireland: 1 in 70

travellingtabby.com/coronavirus-in… There was no update for Northern Ireland this week (although their figures for last week were adjusted a little).

So the figures shown on the page for Northern Ireland are still just for last week, and their trends don't go as far along as the rest of the UK.

This week, Scotland has reported:

🔵 2,694 new cases (up 26%)
🔴 56 new deaths (down 13%)
🟡 1,231 hospital inpatients (up 26%)
🟠 5 ICU inpatients (up 25%)

#covid19scotland #coronavirusscotland So quite a large jump in reported cases this week, across most age groups and council areas.

The number of new tests reported also increased again. I wasn't sure if we'd see many more increases like this at this point, with testing access so limited.

From the Coronavirus Infection Survey, the estimated number of people in each nation who had Covid-19 during the latest week was:

travellingtabby.com/coronavirus-in… Image So a pretty big fall in Scotland, but not too much change in England/Wales/Northern Ireland.

Within England, rates are only currently rising in the North West and Yorkshire & The Humber regions. They're highest in the North East, but rates there have stopped increasing now. ImageImage

Yesterday I had the honour of attending Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II's funeral at Westminster Abbey.

It is hard to put the experience into words. At times it felt like a momentous celebration of her life, and at other times it was just a really somber goodbye. I was invited along with 182 others because I was a recipient of an MBE in this year's Queens Birthday Honours.

I will forever be grateful to the Royal Family for inviting me to be a part of such an important occasion, and allowing me to pay my respects to such a special person.

Having a lazy day today, so I thought I would share a thread discussing some of the data still being released, and what I think is the most useful to look at when trying to assess risk the current situation (primarily focusing on Scotland)! 🧵 So obviously testing is waaaay down. We're currently averaging about 22,000 tests a day, down from about 150,000 a day at the start of the year.

Most people aren't eligible for free tests anymore (just the groups shown below), and private tests aren't included in the figures.

As of today, Northern Ireland will no longer be releasing any case or death data, so going forward those figures on the page will just be for England / Scotland / Wales.

#Covid19UK #coronavirusuk #DailyCovidUpdate ImageImageImageImage I believe the hospital data will still be getting released, but only once a week rather than daily.

And weekly death data should still be getting released by NISRA here: nisra.gov.uk/news/weekly-de…

When I started this page, I was 24... and now I'm 27 😮

Can't believe it has been going on that long! 😅

But as it has been a while, I thought I would share a thread about the page and where it is going... 🧵 Back in February, I was hoping to switch to weekly updates in March and then scale back further in May. Evidently, that didn't happen..

With case rates spiking so much, and the general anxiety surrounding the lifting of restrictions, I didn't think it was appropriate to do that.

Hope everyone had a nice Christmas! 🎅

I just wanted to quickly mention some changes to the page. Mostly just about some of the charts that I've removed, and a couple of other small changes!

As a reminder, neither the Scotland or UK page will be updated until Wednesday. So firstly, on the Scotland page, this chart was removed. It hasn't been updated for over a month anyways 😅

You can still view vaccination data for the priority groups on the PHS dashboard here: public.tableau.com/app/profile/ph…

Merry Christmas everyone!! 😺🎅

A gift for us all: there will be no data released on Christmas Day or Boxing Day, so we can try to put the current situation into the back of our minds.. for a couple of days at least! Image Here is a full schedule for the next couple of weeks!

There will be some English data being released on the red days (other than Christmas/Boxing day), but I still won't be updating the UK page as it would be England only. I'll try to tweet out some of the figures though! Image

Dundee City now has the second-lowest 7-day case rate in Scotland.

That means that the three cities of Glasgow, Dundee, and Edinburgh, have the three lowest case rates in the country (Aberdeen is a lot higher up).

#covid19scotland #DailyCovidUpdate Also, all of the weekly data has been updated, including the hospital admission figures here, which are still falling!

Looks like we should hit 50% of 12-17 year olds being vaccinated with their first dose in the coming days!

For the first time in a month, Scotland no longer has the highest 7 day case rate in the UK. That is now Wales, who have been seeing a bit of an increase over the past week.

#Covid19UK #coronavirusuk #DailyCovidUpdate That is true at a local authority level too, where Neath Port Talbot now have the highest case rate in the UK, as cases in West Dunbartonshire continue to fall.

Also I'm not going to do a big thread this week, but I'll share some of the weekly charts below!

I could cry 😭🥳🇺🇸

It has been a loooong 18 months I've got some family / friends over there who I do hope to visit before the end of the year, if possible.

I'll keep everyone in the loop about that, but if/when I do go, I still plan on keeping the pages updated as normal. Or normalish...

As promised, here is a thread giving an overview of the Covid-19 situation in Scotland from over the past week!

First some figures on cases, which are still rising at a rapid pace. Our daily and 7-day average figures are now the highest they've been since the pandemic began. 👎 Yes, the amount of testing we are doing each day has increased by quite a bit.

But the rise in cases is outpacing that, which has resulted in the positivity rate rising quite steeply too.

Our 7-day positivity rate is now at 11.2%, which is up from 7.2% this time a week ago.
