Conflicted about sharing this during a pandemic but excited to say I’m working with Penguin on my 2nd book: a feminist history of eyeliner from Nefertiti to Amy Winehouse. I’ll study the impact kohl has had on conceptions of beauty, power & gender, focusing on nonWestern cultures Image In exploring this ubiquitous but seldom looked at object, I’ll be offering readers a necessary corrective to a stubbornly homogeneous space in which dominant Western Eurocentric beauty norms have come to suppress the unique cultural features and practises found in other societies Image

53-yr-old Marie's Karantina home was wrecked in the #BeirutBlast, her son was injured & her grandchild fell unconscious. Now she's not only dealing with trauma, but also hunger & having to rebuild her home w no aid

"We were never hungry before," she says

tinyurl.com/y48ztno6 "I have to go to my son’s house to take showers and to clean my clothes every day. Every time I leave my home, I leave it in fear that someone’s going to break in & take the little we have left away from us. We are desperate."

THREAD. Some of you have been asking how you can help people in #Lebanon 🇱🇧 during this brutal economic crisis.

I've put together a thread of resources and organisations to donate to

Please do look them up before donating/contributing

Suggestions welcome, esp local charities: Lebanese Food Bank

@lebfoodbank's "mission is to fight and overcome hunger by developing effective Feeding Programs in parallel with Development & Awareness programs to eliminate hunger"

#MyNakbaStory thread: 1/ In June 1947, my grandpa Abu Adel secured a building permit from the Government of #Palestine for a home in Balad al-Shaykh, a village on the outskirts of #Haifa. For yrs, he'd been selling ful medammes (favabean stew) & hummus from the back of a donkey— 2/ —his first ever business partner. He'd take the donkey from one Palestinian village to another, traveling along unmarked roads in and around Haifa from sunrise to sunset. The people of those villages came to know my grandfather as بياع الفول, the ful seller.
