Israel did not exist until 73 years ago when they were a settler colony that took over Palestine and have been violently maintaining their position ever since. If you don’t know this history here is a good primer to get you started: instagram.com/p/CNz9-5tMkso/… Image The political power Israel has is because they are allies with countries like America who support their state sanctioned violence. Even mentioning the barbaric and violent atrocities they commit is unacceptable in many American political and activist circles. Case in point:

I guess I’m gonna talk about networking today 😛 and my advice probs isn’t exactly the most encouraging 🤷‍♀️ but excited to hear everyone’s experiences and how we can better support new folks in gaming spaces 🥰 Just want to share a little bit on networking. At it's most basic I think networking is simply meeting people and building relationship. You're trying to get them to like you and remember you, but ultimately you have to like them too or else it's just a slog.

We need to talk about the relationship between fans and influencers/streamers. A lot of y’all claim that an influencer has no control over their fans and cannot be held responsible for what their fans do. This is inaccurate. (Granted these are probably the same people who claim that media has no influence on us so I don’t know why I’m bothering but here goes).

I am utterly speechless. #AoIR2020

This thread is about community accountability when the people causing harm are 1) close to you and 2) refuse to be held accountable. I’ve been involved to one degree or another with ReFiG from its beginning (founders of ReFiG are the names in the session above). One of them was my grad school supervisor, was a founding board member of femfreq, among other things. We have a long history. I owe her a lot.

Employees at Rocksteady have been harassing and abusing female employees for years.

The following is a note from a female employee(s) saying she/they feel betrayed that a victim dares to speak up.

Please do not ever feel ashamed to tell your truths. I believe you. It is so deeply troubling that instead of aligning with those who have been harmed and working to hold abusers accountable the writer of this note is attempting to shame and silence anyone who wants to come forward about their experiences.

Over the years we’ve collected data proving that AAA game studios aren’t creating more solo female characters they are creating more player choice for the protagonist’s gender. This very good thread explains one reason why this isn’t the solution to our industry’s sexism problem. We’re still compiling and finalizing the numbers from the pressers we’ve seen this summer and so far there is a statistical increase in the number of games with solo female protagonists but the trend continues to be a focus on binary choice or multi choice games.

I highly encourage folks who are coming forward about abusive people in the games industry to preemptively protect your online data.

@PrivacyDuck and @abine’s Delete Me are two pay services that help scrub your personal information from people finder sites. Our safety guide at @femfreq is a little out of date in parts (we’re working on that) but still has loads of good information especially around how your friends can help you during difficult times online (available in English, Spanish, and Arabic): onlinesafety.feministfrequency.com/en/

Besides the below tweet being just stupid it actually sets up a false dichotomy. The work of challenging media narratives IS a form of “protest[ing] for peoples real rights” [sic]. Let me elaborate. Directly related to police violence think about the decades of media that glamorize the police. Endless TV shows follow detectives who are “the good guys working to make cities safer by putting the bad guys away”. Repeat the above but with prosecutors.

Wow. Nearly 3000 replies because one woman voices her opinion that we shouldn’t be at a point anymore where we just accept media that normalizes patriarchy. Cool cool cool. Everyone’s having a normal one I see. Most mass media overwhelmingly centers men, and perpetuates patriarchy. The #Mandalorian is no exception. It wastes no time in establishing a patriarchal setting: the bartender is a man, the bar patrons are men, the cab driver is a man, etc. The first “female” we meet is the ship

Am I extremely tired or is there not a single female speaking character in the first episode of #Mandelorian?? I've gotta have missed something right??? I guess Jon Favreau was like "well if we just make all the vehicles female like the ship and the Blurrg then we're good right? That's just the right amount of 'female'".

Video Games are having a #metoo moment. The toxicity from fans has been well documented for years but the toxic, abusive, predatory behavior between developers has mostly been spoken in whispers between trusted friends. I'm in awe of the bravery of those who have spoken up today. Their bravery is going to give courage to other women and non-binary folks to speak up and you can rest assured that this is a massive problem affecting and caused by the developers who make the games you love.

So let me remind you: Believe women

This argument is deeply flawed, let me tell you why. Just because creating a female hero was a "risk" doesn't mean she had to be sexualized

Just because marginalized people found joy in the only female option doesn't make her any less sexualized

Just because she was "powerful" in the narrative doesn't make her any less sexualized

Today starts the #E3 press conferences. @femfreq is doing our annual data analysis of the gender breakdown of announced games. Stay tuned! In the first hour of #EAPLAY there have been 10 men on stage to 1 woman.

Apex Legends introduces a new female character with a trailer all about her father brought to you by the men who created her.

Cool. Cool cool cool.

I can't with these headlines about Bush's "masterful foreign policy". He was a warmonger whose violence created unliveable conditions in Iraq hurting civilians, like my family who didn't have access to life saving drugs or basic food. Fuck him. And fuck media's historical erasure My grandfather, who I never had the opportunity to meet, died completely unnecessarily because he couldn't access very basic drugs due to embargos restrictions.

Woke up this morning to a dumpster fire in my mentions (I mean it's always a dumpster fire tbf). These fools are still spreading bullshit conspiracies that are so bonkers they aren't worth repeating but it's just so exhausting. I guess being a misogynist asshole never gets old. But here's the thing -- these conspiracy theories they've been spreading about me for six years seem ludicrous on the surface but they actually work to infect the cultural understanding of me and my work on a much larger scale than their tiny little woman-hating communities.

I wish all these racist, sexist assed fuckers could feel even a tiny bit of shame and even an ounce of compassion. We've gotta reign in the toxicity that is dominating and destroying what would otherwise be vibrant and welcoming fandoms. Within moments of sharing this my feed is full of men telling me how much they disliked Rose as a character. Cool, you are entitled to that opinion BUT YOU DO NOT GET TO HARASS AND ABUSE SOMEONE BECAUSE OF IT.
