I spent this morning listening to Palestinian surgeon @GhassanAbuSitt1 who has just got back from Gaza. He witnessed unspeakable horrors and endured conditions that he described were reminiscent of what surgeons went through during World War One.

🧵🧵

middleeasteye.net/news/israeli-p… Dr Ghassan told me that he had to use washing-up liquid and vinegar to sanitize dressings because his hospital had run out of antiseptic solution.

Then he had to stop giving pain meds to his patients because they had run out and ended up doing surgeries w/o anaesthesia.

Been talking to colleagues and doing some digging on the whole fake fan story in Qatar for last few days.

Seems like they weren’t all fake and came from fan clubs setup by local residents who are - well - passionate and excited about the World Cup. But it got me thinking 1/N For many football fans - especially those from Asia and the global south - this is the closest they’ll ever be to soaking up and experiencing a World Cup. The closest they’ll be to football talismans like Ronaldo and Messi. Why wouldn’t you be excited? I know I would

Bangladesh has confirmed that at least four Bangladeshi nationals have died and around 100 others injured from the Beirut blast.

Over the last 24 hours, I've been sent videos from Bangladeshi workers in Beirut. Here's a thread: Among the injured were 21 Bangladeshi naval officers on duty in Beirut port as part of a UN peacekeeping mission.

Here's a video showing Bangladeshi sailors tending to the wounded near the epicentre of the Beirut blast.

#BREAKING The Saudi government is deporting hundreds of #Rohingya refugees to Bangladesh.

Here's a video sent to me by an inmate in Shumaisi showing Rohingya being lined up, handcuffed, and prepared for deportation. Voice notes from Rohingya inside Saudi Arabia tell me that Saudi prison guards rounded up loads of Rohingya in the middle of the night, and told them to get ready for Bangladesh.

My second report from Bangladesh.

I spoke to Bangladeshi maids who survived abuse and torture inside Saudi Arabia. Here's their story of how they escaped.

middleeasteye.net/news/bangaldes… Probably some of the hardest interviews I've ever had to do. These women endured regular beatings, nearly being burnt alive, and their wages not being paid.

Please do give a read.

Spent the morning w/ @ZouhirAlShimale talking to Syrians displaced from their homes in Douma about possible US strikes in Syria against Assad.

A lot of interesting responses. The key one being: What is the long-term strategy?

middleeasteye.net/news/too-littl… Adnan Dahhan from Douma responds:

"If the attack can prevent further attacks against civilians in Idlib and stop us from being displaced again, and bring us back to our homes, then I am for it."
