.@rtenews asked @LeoVaradkar whether he discussed the state of play & debate over the Withdrawal Agreement during the #ToryLeadershipContest in the UK with @MichelBarnier in a meeting earlier today. An EU source tells me that today's #Barnier #Brexit op-ed does not signal any shift in the EU position or offer anything new to the UK. They said reflects what has been said on previous occasions by Mr Barnier and that he had "nothing concrete in mind". Asked about the timing, the source said the #Barnier #Brexit piece targetted the 26 EU member states other than the UK and Ireland & was "an exercise in bringing all other member states up to speed on the state of play" and "was not drafted in any way to signal a change".

.@MichelBarnier @IIEABrussels talking about meeting civil society groups from both sides of Irish border & meeting school children for perspective on #Brexit. School kid asked him if his job was hard. He said "Yes, beacause there are too many questions and too few answers". "No European country can win these battles alone" - @MichelBarnier on geopolitical challenges. "We have to build a relationship that is built on more than trade". Mentions security & defence, foreign policy.
