Lal Das was appointed by court as the head priest of disputed Ram Janmabhoomi in 1981.

He was a communist & a former CPIM local secretary who opposed VHP was shot dead two days prior to election in Uttar Pradesh, 1993 Baba Lal Das was born in Shringrishi, a village close to Ayodhya, after his religous education he became a pujari in a temple in Mehsana, Gujarat. After Lal Das came to Ayodhya, he served for a while as the secretary of the local Communist Party of India (Marxist) unit.
