I've been reading about the Pfizer clinical trial data for their COVID-19 vaccine today, so I'm gonna write a thread about what I learned.

Overall, remarkable safety and efficacy.

Here we go! The vaccine is shipped as a multi-dose vial, frozen between -80 and -60C, and it has to be thawed and reconstituted with a sterile saline solution.

The vaccine does not have any preservative (one less topic we need to rehash with vax hesitant people....)

A must-read for new skeptics who see themselves as righteous warriors against the frauds of the pseudoscience world (I remember what that's like). I read Chris' book chapter, from which he quotes in his piece, and want to share a few very interesting insights from it. Dare I say, I may have changed my mind on this topic.

"A widely ridiculed paper about jade amulets possibly protecting against COVID-19 makes us wonder what systems are in place to review outlandish claims."

My latest for @McGillOSS w/ quotes from @NaomiOreskes @CaulfieldTim @KimmelmanJ

mcgill.ca/oss/article/co… I felt it important to reach out to the lead author. We chatted for over an hour. A few details that didn't make it into the article to follow.

I do not have the strength to read this paper.

"University of Pittsburgh."

Argues that amulets may prevent COVID-19.

sciencedirect.com/science/articl… Image "We propose that the ferromagnetic-like iron stores in humans are the unifying determinant for COVID-19-induced morbidity and mortality."

Seriously, WTF? What decides if you get severe COVID and die from it is how much iron is in you because of magnetic fields??

Dr. Andrew Kaufman made the rounds in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic by claiming the virus did not exist. Now, he tells hundreds of thousands of YouTube users that everything they know about medicine is wrong.

mcgill.ca/oss/article/co… There was so much I didn’t have room to discuss or link to in my article, so here are some extra thoughts and links.

"But if we are all shouting into our own echo chambers about risky behaviors, shaming may better serve our own reputations than the collective welfare."

nejm.org/doi/full/10.10… "She stressed that she trusted Weiss far more than other experts because he had an open mind & no agenda. When I asked what would increase her trust in medical expertise, she said part of the problem was that 'People think doctors know everything. But you’re just people'."

I’m beginning to think the skeptic’s community “doubt is good, question everything” creed can massively backfire if we don’t give people the tools to arrive at accurate answers. Image Obviously, skepticism is not merely about spreading doubt; we do talk about fallacies, biases, how to evaluate studies, etc. But in an ever more complex world, these tools don’t always cut it.

To all of my morally upstanding friends from the soon-to-be Republic of Gilead, you may want to start looking into immigration into Canada. Here's a place to begin your journey: canada.ca/en/immigration… We've apparently got options for skilled workers. You can immigrate by starting a business here, but I gotta warn you: the sale of ice cream cones is limited to the summer months. There is also a refugee status which... you know, might apply, give it enough time.

MontrealHea!thyG!rl is now a full-on lunatic, emailing her fans about the upcoming 5G *genocide*. I am not even exaggerating. Here are some excerpts from her latest mass email. THREAD. Image "I am still doing research and testing out my protocols but am planning on putting this out as soon as I get all the info and results I need to ensure safety."

Protocols against what, you ask? Chemical and nanotech poisoning for the upcoming genocide.

I'm watching a video of a medical doctor who thinks herpes is due to a collagen deficiency and that toxins in your rectum can teleport into your urinary tract and cause UTIs.

Tens of thousands of views.

This is my life now.

A survey conducted in June shows 18% of Canadians believe in a conspiracy theory linked to COVID-19, compared to 35% of Americans. Lots of caveats: see THREAD!

ici.radio-canada.ca/nouvelle/17334… Survey of 1,500 people per country, but the details have not been released yet. All we get is this report from the CBC.

Are forehead thermometers emitting dangerous infrared radiation to affect children's pineal glands?

NO!

A few words about this nonsensical theory I was just made aware of.

THREAD. Image Infrared thermometers sometimes emit a visible light (hence not infrared) to make sure you are aiming it at the right spot.

They do not EMIT infrared; they PICK UP infrared light that is emitted by the forehead.

Our bodies have heat. They emit it in the form of IR.

If someone in your life believes a coronavirus patent proves the COVID-19 virus was made in a lab, this is the thread for you. I go over the various patents that have been brandished around by conspiracymongers. THREAD!

#COVID19 #Patent #COVIDー19 The Pirbright Institute patent: it’s actually for a virus called IBV, a type of coronavirus that causes bronchitis in birds. It’s not for SARS-CoV-2. (US10130701B2, EP3172319A1 and EP3172319B1.)

There's another element of Netflix's (Un)Well I didn't have room to address and that's the proximity of religion to wellness in the docuseries. @AlanLevinovitz @ColleenDerkatch, you might be interested. mcgill.ca/oss/article/he… Even though the show's only 6 episodes, and on a variety of topics from fasting to bee sting therapy, God and Jesus are mentioned in one way or another again and again and again.

My thoughts on #Plandemic. I feel like half my brain has been burnt off… but I do value the experience of watching the kind of videos that so many people fall for, and there’s a good reason why they fall for them. Image Plandemic feels true. It strings along a number of real issues in a seemingly endless Gish gallop so you don’t have time to think about how they all link up (or don’t). And it structures this mad dash with competent cinematography, uneasy music, and good sound design.

So many people are curious about their genes. These same people might get curious about their “true biological age” and companies are happy to take their money. I just wrote about it. Here’s what I found. THREAD. Image 23andMe has become the “Kleenex” of the direct-to-consumer genetic testing world. It’s short-hand for the type of product itself.
