Four owls I’ve observed in Manhattan outside Central Park: 1) Flaco in the LES (Thursday); 2) barred owl in Bryant Park (2022); 3) snowy owl in Hudson River Park by West Side Highway (2022); and 4) Central Park snowy owl on a roof in Harlem (2021). Cont’d

#birds #nature #birdcpp Image On Thursday night, Flaco spent about three hours hooting from rooftop in the Lower East Side. He was roughly twenty stories up. He had evidently done this the night before but did not seem to repeat it Friday and Saturday nights. Image

Flaco, the escaped Eurasian eagle-owl, perched on the Naumburg Bandshell last Friday night. Extreme opinions have been expressed about him. On this subject and others, perhaps we should behave more like owls: patiently watch and wait. (1/15)

#birds #birdwatching #nature #birdcpp The question of Flaco’s continuing freedom is moot with the zoo suspending its efforts to capture him again. I was able to observe their efforts to attract him with playback last Thursday night. He was responsive vocally but seemed to fly away from it more than towards it. (2/15)
