🧵 thread: As a human rights defender concerned with human rights in the MENA region, meeting & working with many officials in Western capitals, here’s some ABC reminders regarding the flood of Western governments’ statements about Israel/Palestine, & why it’s self-defeating Image Western leaders rushing to support Israeli govt “revenge” & collective punishment against Gaza without uttering a word about apartheid, & Israeli war crimes aren’t just failing to see context. They fuel the circle of violence impacting Isr/Pal civilians they claim to care about.

As expected, explained in economic reports for months, the Egyptian pound over a night lost about 12% of its value ($1 USD = 17.5 instead of 15.7). Currency fluctuations, not volatility, are normal. Here's a small thread 🧵🧵about what the gov't and @IMFNews should address. Lack of transparency is stark + harmful. The gov't doesn't inform its citizens about things even though every economic expert or paper was talking about the anticipated step. Opacity obviously is a defining character of Sisi's authoritarian gov't + it reflects fear & paranoia.

Corona is ravaging in #egypt but the government still insists in all official statements that it’s doing what it can but people are not adhering to precautions. Here I debunk these statements. 1- the gov’t releases unbelievably silly statements that the rate is only hundreds of cases + 30-50 deaths daily. Signaling to people a totally false sense of security or that the virus is “under control”. These are all blatant lies.

In this thread 👇 I want to explain a little bit more of the context surrounding the campaign of arrests, prosecutions & jail of women in #Egypt under "morality" charges that @HRW documented 15 of since late April, and why it's horrifying hrw.org/news/2020/08/1… This campaign is NOT a "side" effect of oppression in Egypt. Neo-patriarchy is, by definition, a core doctorine of the nationwide oppressive machinery revived to its fullest following 2013 military takeover & re-vitalized & inspired by conservative, populist military rules (Sisi)
