For the past few months, people have been asking me about these two clocks that keep showing up in my videos—one in my rack, another at my desk.
Both are PoE-powered NTP clocks from a local company called @masterclock 🧵
In that second picture is my 'Time Pi', a project I've been working on for over a year which runs a Raspberry Pi as a Stratum 1 NTP/PTP server with a timing-specific GPS module from u-blox. More details on my blog: jeffgeerling.com/blog/2025/diy-…

The Raspberry Pi 500 launches today, for $90. Raspberry Pi sent one to test, and of course the first thing I did was rip the shell apart to see if it had an M.2 slot inside... #Pi500 🧵
This picture, unfortunately, was taken *after* I had attempted to solder on my own M.2 socket (and failed miserably, lol). The #Pi500 includes pads for both an M.2 socket and PoE support, but alas, they are unpopulated.

The JetKVM—it's not an Apple Watch, it's my favorite new IP KVM 🧵
First, for a *full video* testing all its current capabilities, see:
I cover use with SBCs, mini PCs, even the new AmpereOne 192-core monster server in my rack! (2/x)

External graphics cards work on the Raspberry Pi 5 now, first up is the AMD RX 460:
Quick blog post with summary of where we are:
I think a lot of the clash of open source philosophy between my own experience and people in the Red Hat realm comes from my introduction to open source in the #Drupal community.
Drupal is also "encumbered" by the GPLv2 license, just as the Linux kernel is.
A thread 🧵
Drupal's ecosystem is worth less than Red Hat Enterprise Linux, but I would posit probably not an _order of magnitude_ less.
But in the Drupal community, Drupal itself (like the Linux kernel) is held more openly, to be improved and used by individuals and companies together.

One of the interesting outcomes of the Red Hat situation:
Distribution of GPLv2 source code requires no downstream restrictions (free or paid).
Does threatening retaliation (account suspension) for sharing code count as a 'restriction' on exercising a user's rights?
So far I've heard from three corporate #opensource licensing experts the answer is no.
According to them the EULA only deals with an account-holder's ability to acquire services from Red Hat.
Termination of an account would not trigger the 'no restrictions' clause of the GPLv2.

I didn't plan on making a YouTube video about the RHEL situation.
But I might. Stream vs downstream is not the big problem.
Red Hat changing the game (twice now in as many releases of EL) mid-release and screwing those they call "freeloaders" is.
I feel like I should use the platform I have to fight for the #opensource ideals as I see them... and as I think the @redhat of a decade ago would see them.
It's doubly sad because I've had to burn some bridges this weekend, and it changes my relationship w/ Hatters.

I've had a Microsoft Account (ugh) for over a decade.
I just tried creating an 'App' within Azure. But when I signed in, I found my account is owned by the school my daughter attends (for one year).
Somehow that school has adopted my MS account?!
Now I can't do anything with my personal Microsoft account in Azure since the school owns all my account permissions! I can't 'switch directory' or anything. Somehow even though my email is on my own domain, I can't get control of my own MS account?

Data analyst @gregsutcliff has some extremely insightful data in his 'Ansible - State of the Community 2023' post: ansible.github.io/community/post…#ansible#opensource
Following up on some of the notes about the decline—as someone who's worked on both sides of the Red Hat fence, I think one big shift is IBM's purchase, and how that affected the community dynamics. Two big things happened (both percolated a while):

Windows Dev Kit 2023 (aka "Project Volterra") has arrived. Box is fine, just includes large power adapter and regulatory papers.
A thread 🧵(1/??)
Power adapter is 90W and includes a fancy Windows 11 hologram, put on a bit askew.
