A thread: I've spent the past few weeks looking into China's '100 most wanted' corruption suspects, 40 of whom are at large. But I found their Interpol ‘red notices’ - the global wanted posters touted by Beijing - have vanished from view. A thread ensues: Canada has a handful of federal electorates that are ethnic Chinese majority/near-majority seats, all clustered around Richmond BC & Markham ON. I've gone thru #Elxn44 numbers & all experienced a plunge in Tory support, large and remarkable in context IMO. 2/ The context is this: there was no big loss in Tory vote share across Canada (-0.5%), in BC (-0.7%) or Ontario (+1.9%). In Richmond, BC, and Markham, Ontario, the Conservative vote plunged in Canada’s most Chinese electorates. Ousted Richmond MP Kenny Chiu had doors slammed in his face. So, it turns out BMW is chasing smugglers clear across Canada after they lease/buy luxe cars in Ontario, then immediately send them to Vancouver to load onto ships for China without paying. It's insane, with bailiffs hunting cars via GPS scmp.com/news/china/mon… via @scmpnews Particularly shocking: the ease with which bogus buyers get C$100,000+ cars, based on fake credentials, bank accs, jobs. So, apropos of nothing, if you're interested in the Chinese wuxia genre, but hate old movies just BECAUSE, I commend to you "Shadow", the gorgeous 2018 take by Zhang Yimou that employs the best of the genre while avoiding the, umm, less-accessible bits And while I'm at it: the best modern samurai film I've seen (& I've seen a LOT of samurai films) must be "13 Assassins", which whiplashes from serene idiomatic exchanges to horrific/imaginative/bloody battle.
