Listening to SB 137 yesterday was honestly very very difficult. I knew I’d find some of the opposition distasteful, but the cruelty went on for a long time. A thread. /1 It is very clear that if the opponents (testifiers and legislators—including SD Right to Life) had their way, they would ban IVF and surrogacy entirely. They would ban the right of our 4 beautiful children to exist at all. /2

It is just not that hard to recognize that both private industry and government have the capacity to and very often have perpetrated injustice, exploitation, and cruelty. Our democracy should always be a check on both. /1 Dehumanization and bogey tactics are bullshit to get clicks and votes. Bogey being appropriately described as “a mythical malevolent creature that has no specific form and appearance.” But as we have seen this week dabbling in such things is NOT harmless. /2

Governor, please talk to South Dakota moms. I’m a partnered mom living near a huge chunk of extended family. I’m worried, anxious, fatigued. I’m not seeing my family to try to get to a place where we can safely spend time together again.

Our daughter died. For whatever reason, I feel a need to clearly mark this before I can ever tweet again about politics, policy, food, books, or community. Our daughter—Lenny—was born with a true knot in her cord, and she only lived for 7 days.

I cannot believe how much I’ve heard about concern for maternal mortality and infant mortality in the last hour regarding repealing childhood vaccination mandates and banning commercial surrogacy. /1 I know people will tell me I should not be surprised, but I still cannot believe how legislators will visit these issues when they suit them and completely ignore them in all other contexts. /2

I find it difficult to sort through all the feelings I have about #sdleg and the absolute flood of cruel bills that have been dropped in the past couple of weeks. /1 One thing is entirely clear: a loud and influential number of legislators have no vision or leadership skills whatsoever to lead SD into the future. /2

I wanted to watch the Downton Abbey movie. @billiehsutton wanted to watch The Irishman. We compromised on Out of Africa. This is the second year in a row we’ve watched an old movie neither of us had seen. Last year was Boogie Nights.

This morning at the @SDBankers Women in Banking conference, we’ve heard from Dr. Suzi Kalsow, Virginia Heyburn, and Erika Klein. /1 Dr. Kalsow talked about how to get noticed as a leader and generated a lot of good buzz at our table about how to better communicate an organization’s mission, vision, and values. /2

I find these report cards interesting. I value all of our SD schools wholeheartedly, but lawmakers often talk about “efficiency.” But what does “efficiency” mean in a small school versus large school context?

We are headed toward hour 12 of our trek from Vail, CO, to Sioux Falls, SD today. We did the first 11 hours with a 3 yo, but for the last leg we are down to the OG Kenzy/Sutton duo. ... @billiehsutton is honestly in his element late night driving, and I’m enjoying how much traipsing around CO and NE together reminds me of our college days.

David Brooks wrote recently in the @nytimes that he thinks “happiness is found amid thick and loving relationships.” After this past weekend of friendship and family time, I need to spend more time feeling grateful for the “thick and loving” relationships in my life. ❤️ I have a nuclear family AND in-laws that are amazing. I have friendships that span 10-15 years of ups and downs. I get to see and live amongst many of these people daily.

I'll be very anxious to hear why HB 1178 is allegedly needed in SD. It changes the time for absentee (early) voting from 46 days to 14 days. It was introduced by Representative Qualm, and signed on to by Representative Finck and Senator Blare, which disappoints me very much. sdlegislature.gov/docs/legsessio…

“There are now 625 rural counties in the country without a community bank. There are 37 counties without a single bank, and 115 counties served by just one bank.” cfra.org/news/181228/to… Access to credit is a critical rural and equity issue. I’m proud to work at a small community bank that is wholly committed to the communities it serves.

“It really is a crisis.” Just like @billiehsutton has always said: Medicaid expansion is a life or death isssue. As the article points out, reimbursement rates also disproportionately affect rural areas. We must #expandmedicaid in SD. “Deak and other experts say the primary cause of nursing home failures in South Dakota and across the United States is insufficient Medicaid payments to nursing facilities.”

“At night, Badlands country was an eerie wonder world, silvered over with muted luminescence as if all were in dream and he a bearded bad conscience. . . .” “The soothing south wind was especially haunting. It made him cry sometimes. It played old harps in his head. It made him wonder at the good of it all. What did a man really live for? Today’s meat? Tomorrow’s journey? Or what?”
