I bite my tongue a lot, but I worked on Windrush and I am seriously uncomfortable calling for an "inquiry" into Manston. If the Govt did it, they would drag it out for years refusing to answer questions or change anything. Can we be serious and ask for what's needed. The govt. has moved huge numbers of people out overnight, and someone has died while potentially being held unlawfully. That's a police investigation/inquest that could be huge and would have far more teeth than a govt. inquiry. This is an opportunity to work across sectors.

I cannot stress enough that TERFs are fascist adjacent if not full blown. They are not the ordinary people who have questions or don’t understand. They are a becoming a well developed, organised hate group that has been radicalised online. They are dangerous. It is only a matter of time before someone is physically hurt. They have already caused a lot of mental/emotional damage. They will progress. Just like every other hate group.

The Government has introduced more detail into the Borders Bill and it's as ghastly as you can imagine.

Blackmail, "scientific" assessments from the dark ages, and misuse of the justice system.

Dystopian doesn't cover it ⬇️ First up - there are some countries that currently do not work with the UK on deportations. They don't accept people who have been removed or deported. The Government is relying on deals with these countries or it can't carry out it's plans in the Borders Bill.

If you’ve ever panic bought toilet paper or petrol, just remember you’re experiencing the tiniest fraction of the panic people feel when they’re forced to flee their homes or cross the channel. I’m saying this because, in a crisis, whatever you think will make you feel safe is how you respond. It may not seem rational or logical to others, but to you it makes perfect sense.

Today's proposal from Priti Patel is so extreme and dangerous that even I am shocked by it. Here's why ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️
bbc.co.uk/news/uk-584959… What Patel is suggesting is something called a "pushback" or more closely according to @ZoeJardiniere a "mass expulsion". It involves dragging dinghies out of British waters and just leaving them to float until someone else picks them up. This is an illegal practice.

Some earnest thoughts on the events in #Glasgow #Pollokshields.

What happened there today epitomises everything that's wrong with the Home Office and this Government - but also shows us how we can oppose them. ⬇️⬇️⬇️ When the Home Office chose to send immigration enforcement vans on Eid, it wasn't an accident. Raids rely on foreseeing a person's location. They're also intended to be incredibly distressing, disorientating and confusing. Imagine being torn from your family on Xmas day.

Anti-deportation campaigners need to get real smart real quick. Patel is now considering deporting people with 6 month convictions. That’s petty theft, cannabis, minor offences like fraud. thetimes.co.uk/article/priti-… In the context of #BlackLivesMatter and #windrush - the government response is to make it easier to deport people whose rights are being violated.

Deportations: A Thread

Next week the Home Office has chartered a flight to Jamaica, intending to deport people who have been in the UK their whole lives.

Today the #Stansted15 appeal their conviction for peacefully stopping one of these flights from occurring. Deportations are the pinnacle of the Government's Hostile Environment agenda. The threat of deportation, detention and re-detention and immigration raids, are all tactics used by the Home Office to keep people in a state of chaos and to stop them being part of our communities.

THREAD: Right now it is being reported that people may have died in the Channel, including a baby and a toddler.

The Home Office will spin this so that they are removed from responsibility. You'll hear noises about traffickers and lawyers. But whose fault is it really? I am VERY sure every single person in this country wants these crossings to end. I do not want a single person to have to make that terrifying journey or die trying. The solutions we pose will bring an end to this trend. jcwi.org.uk/briefing-safe-…

I really didn't want to do a thread on safe and legal routes to the UK - but I can already tell that there's going to be a minefield of myths and hate speech today and there's some things that we need to be saying. It makes total sense that there is an increase in crossings. Good weather, bad pandemic. Govt. has said that they will "shut down" routes and militarise the border. People on the other side of the channel can hear that too - it will make them more desperate. Predictable outcome.

The Prime Minister said something today to the @CommonsLiaison that was both incredibly important and utterly shocking. He admitted that he does not know migrants and their families are unable to access public funds. His emotional response was, rightly, disgust. Most people are unaware that many migrants are unable to access Government support right now during a pandemic due to harsh visa conditions. At a time when it's clear to us all that support from the Government is the difference between life and death.

I am so fed up with having to debunk the racism in the @greenparty. Deeply disappointed and angry at @jon_bartley perpetuating racism via the lens of the environment. Here is why. Why isn’t the same rule applied to kosher meat? Not that it should at all. But the fact that this doesn’t is far more about Islamophobia than about stunning. Particularly as kosher rules are in some ways far stricter.

Hey @GreenRupertRead. As a migration expert and a green, I can tell you that everything you think on migration is not only factually incorrect but is also racist. You don’t represent the Greens or the climate movement. Step back from #bbctqt and let someone qualified step in ⬇️ your ‘take’ is completely western centric, designed only to protect white people in the global north. It’s also founded on historic racist narratives of population control - which call only for black and brown people to control their populations.
