Good move.
PRC-related company ByteDance has overwhelming control over TikTok, and the concern is beyond users’ private data. TikTok can be integrated into China’s information warfare easily so that the PRC can indirectly control what people see.
bbc.co.uk/news/live/worl… Some more facts to be shared:
1. Details of the relationship between TikTok and ByteDance remain unclear to outsiders. Staff sometimes don’t know who to report to, and who to get directions from. It shows that ByteDance has the ability to affect TikTok’s decision-making.

1. For the past years, the National Security Bureau has been accusing me of violating the National Security Law. Today, the specifics of the were revealed: Incitement to secession, collusion with foreign forces to endanger national security.
One million HKD bounty is warranted. 2. I have previously been "wanted" for other cases, and obtained refugee status in the UK two years ago. These charges are classic examples of abusing the concept of "national security", pushing its definition to an extreme to suppress dissident voices.

Image 2/

Quick updates of #Chinaprotest:
- Police are stationed in many main protest sites
- Protestors started to be arrested by police
- Some of the early patches of protestors are released
- Citizens continue to pop up at street corners with blank papers 2/
Things that are worthwhile looking at:
- Attitude of the central govt. News showed that some of the city’s COVID control have been relaxed, but that’s not the whole country. I believe Beijing has not yet decided how to react.

1. This is a short thread about the infiltration of totalitarian CCP propaganda machines, their assaults on democratic traditions and an appeal to actions in UK.
The Chinese Communist Party tries to get a free pass on their appalling human rights atrocities. We must stop them. 2. Yesterday, a group of pro-Beijing organizations hosted an "anti-Asian hate" rally in Chinatown. Of course, it's indispensable to address the problems of racial-based hate crime. But the speakers kept equating criticism on China to stirring hate to Chinese people.

1. Most of you may not understand how dreadful the closure of Apple Daily means to Hong Kong. Not only to its journalistic landscape, but also to the people and the city itself. This is their last day. They are going to print 1 million copies tomorrow to commerate the fight. 2. The parent company of Apple Daily, Next Digital Limited, is a listed company. The govt forced a listed company to close itself in a matter of days, though signs have been there for months.

1. Last week I was invited to attend a guest series at UChicago’s Harris School of Public Policy. By then, I did not realize that the UC Chinese Students and Scholars Association(CSSA) protested the invitation and accuse me of “hurting” their feelings with all the disinformation. 2. The CCP colluders are trying to silence the critics in YOUR country. It raises concerns over infiltration from the CCP into the US academics, and the societies in general. I am pleased that the school upholds the values of free speech and academic integrity.

1. 47 democratic activists are charged with "conspiracy to subvert state power" and will appear in court tomorrow. All of them are remanded in custody.
It's heartbroken to witness such massive persecution. Let me explain what has happened and why it's an insult towards democracy 2. The police arrested 55 democratic figures last month with the National Security Law due to their participation or organization of a primary election last July, preparing for the 2020 legislative council election. The election is postponed, and the candidates are being hunted.

1. @Foreignpolicy published an article by former special assistant to President Ronald Reagan @Doug_Bandow, suggesting a more engaging policy to China. Since he mentioned my comments, I'd like to respond to a few of his points on the grand strategy to China. 2. Reasonable men would not expect Hong Kong can be liberated by "foreign forces." The fight for democracy relies on Hong Kong people's resistance and timely international pressures on the autocracy. "Hongkongers put their hopes in Washington" is not an accurate description.

1. It’s devastating to witness three of my former colleagues, Joshua, Agnes, Ivan are jailed. The sentencing is absurd. Retweet if you have the same demands:
1.Immediate release of the trio
2.Stop prosecuting under National Security Law
3.Sanction accountable govt officials 2. Once again, It’s another blatant attack on the HK activists, whose wishes are solely bringing democracy to Hong Kong. Beijing never fulfilled their promises Rather, they have politically suppressed tens of thousands of protestors who are chanting for their legitimate claims.

1. THREAD: Like all of you, I found out from news reports that I — along with five other Hong Kongers currently overseas — am on the wanted list for having violated the NSL. I have no idea what is my “crime” and I don’t think that’s important. Perhaps I love Hong Kong too much. 2. Since 2014 I have experienced a lot of ups and downs: from student leader to a Legislative Council member, and from a prisoner to an international advocate, I have not for a moment betrayed Hong Kongers’ values and democratic aspirations.

1. THREAD: Amid a series of strong UK responses — the Huawei ban and the suspension of its extradition treaty
with #HongKong among them — to growing signs of Chinese imperialism, @SecPompeo paid an important visit to London, where he and I had a great conversation yesterday. 2. Unlike previous meetings with top American government representatives, I enjoyed the opportunity to sit down and chat personally with Pompeo for over 20 minutes. We touched first and foremost on the latest threats of the new, Beijing-imposed National Security Law.

1. THREAD: No Hong Konger is under the illusion that Beijing has any intention to respect our basic rights and honor its promises to us. Mass arrests have already begun on the first day of the National Security Law's implementation. 2. At the @HouseForeign hearing yesterday, I spoke about the regime's lawlessness in hopes that the world would not forget about what's going on in Hong Kong. Of course, I knew my speech and appearance would put my own safety in serious jeopardy given the circumstances.

【please spread out】

To people all around the world,

We, Hongkongers just experienced a terrorist attack planned and executed by the Hong Kong Police Force. At about 10pm today (31 Aug 2019), HK police force rushed into our railway system in Prince Edward station, got into the carriage and indifferently beat up all the people in it regardless they are protesters or simply passengers. They ignored the weapon guidelines and fired tear gas indoor in the carriage which is in fact lethal.
