The indigenous Chammaro people are believed to have first arrived in 1,500 BCE. The islands were colonized from 1668 by the Spanish, briefly occupied by the US in 1898, then sold to Germany (and separated from Guam) in 1899. It was then occupied by Japan in 1914,.By World War II - settlers outnumbered the indigenous population.
