The @IEA's World Energy Outlook, a story through infographics. 🧵

1. Under current policy settings and market conditions, CO2 emissions are likely to peak and then plateau. This corresponds with a 2.4° C temperature rise by 2100. A lot more needs to be done to make a difference. Image Note: STEPS stands for the Stated Policies Scenario that considers existing policy settings and market conditions; APS stands for Announced Pledges Scenario, which assumes all government aspirations are met in full and on time, and NZE is the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 scenario.

🚨 New analysis by @IEA and @IFC_org:

The global energy economy is being transformed, but developing countries are being left behind.

Clean energy investments surged 60% since 2015. But among developing countries (excluding China), they have remained low and flat.

Thread 🧵 This can't be emphasised enough: a new clean energy economy is emerging globally. Here's the context.

In 2018, for every dollar spent on fossil fuels, a dollar was spent on clean energy.

But this year, for every dollar spent on fossil fuels, 1.7 dollars will be spent on clean.

This is big, very big. 🚨

India has announced a net zero emissions target by 2070 at #COP26

This will have implications on everything — energy supply, transport, industry, air quality, jobs.

@IEA's India Energy Outlook 2021 was the first study to analyze such a scenario. 🧵👇🏽 IEA's Sustainable Development Scenario (green line below) takes India to net zero emissions in the mid-2060s. Not very far away from the target of 2070.

The blue line at the top represents a scenario based on current policies and stated ambitions (prior to net zero 2070).

There's a lot of chatter on "net zero" emission goals in the energy and climate community, but the rest of the world has still not understood the implications of it.

This is something that could change *everything*. Since people still can't imagine how, here's a #thread 🧵 First, what is net zero emissions? And what are the goals?

Many countries have announced "net zero" carbon emissions goals by 2050.

Do you see that blue line? Those are historic carbon emissions since 1950.

To get to zero, emissions will have to fall along the red dotted line

Block many, block often, block to make the Internet community better.

Here’s the case for blocking *any* and *all* problematic handles you see on Twitter, regardless of whether they’re trolling or being rude to you personally: 1. If someone is trolling or being rude to someone else today, they’ll troll you tomorrow, and someone else the day after that. Not blocking them encourages their behaviour. Block them.

People think India's population is ballooning but that is not true anymore.

For decades, India has talked about "hum do hamare do" as a mantra for population control.

In 2020, we may have already reached it. A #thread. Firstly, in most Indian states, each couple *already* has 2 or fewer children. This means that the population in the light blue states (map) is *falling* from one generation to the next.

"Hum do, hamare dedh (one and a half)" is becoming the new reality in most Indian states.

This is Delhi NCR (Noida) today. It literally smells like burning leaves. AQI is over 900. This is the air quality in my living room. Just turned on the air purifier a few minutes ago. Never before it has been over 200 this season.

I have a small file of scientific facts that make me go “wow”. And today, a friend started a thread asking for everyone’s favourite scientific facts, concepts, postulates and questions.

Here are a few of my favourites. #thread 1. The reason ten feels like a round number is totally random: a function of the evolution of ten fingers on our hands. Every number base is base 10.
