Tamil Nadu float has been "rejected" in R-Day because Modi Govt felt that freedom fighters in Tamil Nadu should not be respected? Wow. Fake propaganda machine in full swing today. By the time the truth is told to people the lie would have travelled all over the world. Each year only limited number of floats from States are selected. Defence Ministry appoints committee of people from field of arts etc to finalize the list. 6-7 rounds of shortlisting and discussions are held. Floats can be rejected for any number of reasons, theme, visual appeal

For all those asking what is her legacy and if it is only corruption here is a thread
1.A belief in the idea of India. She put down separatist forces with a firm hand.Never compromised on National interest. TN cd hv been a troubled spot otherwise
2. No compromise on Social justice 69% reservation in the State got Consitutional protection due to her Govt.
3. No compromise on State Interests. Cauvery one example but many more. Even CM Stalin accepted this publicly
4.Commitment to secularism. Except for the brief attempt to push thru anti conversion

My tweet on the Madurai Library has caused so many to react. I hv even had people calling in to say how wrong I am. So let me explain my point of view.
1.Worldwide the patronage of public libraries has fallen. Many countries have started shutting them down. In UK over 800 public libraries have been closed in last 10 years. In the US there has been a 31% fall in public library usage between 2010-18 (pre-covid)
2.Within India also there has been a documented fall in patronage of public libraries though exact numbers are hard to find.

Over 17000 trees to be cut including plantations,26 water bodies to be affected for this new Expressway. Some of the 106 km in TN passes thru cultivable land. Environmentalists in TN are missing. Media is in mute mode. This Expressway is most essential and will greatly help economic development but so would have the Chennai Salem expressway. The sheer political opportunism masked as environmental concern needs to be called out. Every development project has some impact on the environment. Our aim should be to strike a balance between the two

A CM not greeting people on one of the two most celebrated festivals of the State, one celebrated by the majority of people in Tamil Nadu only shows that this is not an inclusive Govt. A party leader can be as he likes.A CM has to be inclusive.

Why a #NationalHealthID is neither needed nor desirable. Thread...
#AyushmanBharatDigitalMission
1. Indians are already drowning in ID's. Aadhar is already a unique ID.Why do we need another one just for health? Why not use Aadhar? #DigitalHealthMission @mansukhmandviya 2. It is well known that vast majority of people seek medical help within their State or neighbouring State.Someone who is from a village in say, UP,is most unlikely to seek medical assistance outside the State or beyond nearest metro city. Why is a National ID required for this?

Life lesson: Never reply to an email or message when you are angry or provoked. In my younger days I would get easily provoked and send angry replies to mails and msgs. A few years ago I learnt to apply a different technique. I would compose the reply but wd save it in drafts. Then I wd do something else & return to look at the draft at the end of the day or next day when I had cooled down. 99% of those drafts never got sent. I wd not delete those mails from Drafts folder. Every few weeks I look at them and wonder how stupid I wd hv been to send them

Thread on Justice A.K.Rajan Committee report.
Issues
1.Selective usage of Data.
2. Makes several unverifiable assumptions
3.Non exclusion of outlier data
4.Drawing inferences/conclusions without evidence Concerns
1. Data on students from Govt schools who got MBBS seats pre and post #NEET is selectively put out.(Everything else is from 2010-2020. This alone is from 2014) . Why?
2. How did Committee decide that 99% of students who qualified through NEET took coaching?

Genius of #Periyar lay in getting a majority of people of TN to identify themselves with what they were not. Normally we identify with who we are by religion/ caste/language etc.Periyar got people to identify themselves as non brahmin, not as who they were, but as who they were not In no other part of India would you find people referring to themselves as non brahmins. They would always see themselves as being part of their community or social group. In Periyar's days it made sense. Brahmins dominated disproportionately and oppressed other communities

Yesterday I was on 2 Tamil TV debates on 27% #Reservation announced for OBC candidates in UG&PG Medical admissions. What struck me more than claims from panelists that it was their party/movement's efforts that forced Central Govt to announce this, was their take against EWS quota EWS was passed in Parliament with almost all parties incl.Congress,CPM, BSP,SP,TMC etc. supporting it. Yet in TN most Dravidian parties have a problem with it that no one in the rest of India seems to have.(Like for NEET). Mind you EWS does not touch the existing quotas but still

Welcome announcement of @PKSekarbabu to appoint female priests in temples. This should have been a change brought about by Hindu community itself &not dictated by Government but since this is a reform that is progressive one must welcome it despite fact it is being dictated 1/7 The only constant in the world is change. That applies to religions too.Any religion that is infelxible to societal changes around it is bound to perish. One of the great strengths of Hinduism has been its adaptability to change. Rituals have been modified to suit the norms 2/7

An important thread on the #Oxygen situation in Tamil Nadu. This information is obtained after speaking to some of the manufacturers including R.Kannan former President of the AIIGMA.

My take on what the result of the #TamilNaduElections could be. This is based on hundreds of conversations with people across the State including politicians, journalists and public over the last 5 days. The feedback I got is in this thread... #tamilnaduelection2021 1.Chennai:DMK seems headed for a comfortable win. AIADMK will be happy if they get more than 3-4 seats out of the 16.
2. Northern Belt: Vanniar consolidation has happened. Only question is how much. And has there been a counter polarization of other castes against AIADMK-BJP?

@the_hindu reminded me it was the birth anniversary of an extraordinary physician and teacher of ours, Dr.A.M.Selvaraj. Prof.AMS as he was known was a legend in his life time. Immaculately dressed in a 3 piece suit & smoking a pipe, he reminded us of a "propah" British gentleman His ability to diagnose tough cases had few equals and his evening clinic would go on from 5 p.m. until 2 a.m. or beyond. Sometimes patients wd just sleep over in the clinic and he wd see them in the morning. His laid back demeanor hid a razor sharp mind.

Why the #AIADMKManifesto promise of a Govt job for every family is simply not possible.Thread....
TN has around 14 lakh State Govt employees. Roughly that would cover around 56 lakh people ( 4 ppl per family). Let us take only BPL families to see if this promise is feasible TN has around 60 lakh BPL families. Presumably if one of them had a Govt job they wouldn't be below the poverty line. So this means that 60 lakh Govt jobs have to be given. That means number of Govt employees will go up from 14 lakh to around 75 lakh.

The inescapable conclusion is that the 2nd wave of #Covid has stared in India. Not just in Maharashtra or Kerala. Cases are rising in many States,Punjab, Telangana,Tamil Nadu, Karnataka,Delhi etc. This is a big worry as we have wasted the last month by not speeding up vaccination of the vulnerable. We cannot lockdown the economy again but we need to do the following ASAP.
1.Reintroduce the ban on crowds, large gatherings, rallies.
2.Enforce fines for not wearing masks.
3.Speed up vaccination by opening 24*7 vaccination centers
4.Encourage work from home

#Covid will be controlled once the vaccine is rolled out. Right? And once we get more effective drugs to treat severe cases? Both of these involve big bucks for the Healthcare industry. Again a case of healthcare following the money. Billions of $ are being spent on vaccines Billions more on research for new drugs but precious little is being spent in studying those who haven't got Covid. Yes, the answer to the Covid riddle may be in finding out who will not get infected rather than just knowing who will. Let me explain.

The most puzzling aspect of #Covid is its reluctance to infect Chinese since April 2020. Of the 87000 cases China has reported so far 68000+ have been in Hubei province which got it first. Rest of China with a population of 1330 million has reported a total of <19000 cases.Thread Beijing with population of 21 million has reported 961 cases and 9 deaths. Shanghai with population of 24 million has reported 1447 cases and 7 deaths. Chongqing with a population of 15 million says they hv had 560 cases and 6 deaths.

Just as farmers are feeding us, the tax paying public is feeding the farmers too.Subsidy on seeds, fertilizer, farm equipment, electricity, water are all paid from taxpayer money. MSP which is often artificially high is also funded by taxpayer. No income tax. Regular loan write offs Yet most small farmers remain pitiably poor. Why?The solution cannot be more of the same, more subsidy or artificially high MSP. Romanticizing the poverty of the Indian farmer must stop. Farmers are not doing society a favor. They are trying to eke out a living the best they can
