Today is the last working day at the Supreme Court. Which means that it's time for me to take stock of the important judgments of the Supreme Court this year.

Many Constitution Bench judgments this time so you don't want to miss this. 👇 1. The year began with a bang when a Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court in Vivek Narayan Sharma v. UOI upheld the demonetization of bank notes of value Rs. 500 and 1000 in November 2016. J. BV Nagarathna differed and held that RBI was not adequately consulted.

My favourite ritual on twitter is a list of notable judgments of the year.

It comes out on the last working day of the Supreme Court for the calendar year, which is today. So here's my list 👇 Reservation was earlier described as an exception to the rule of merit. The Supreme Court while permitting EWS and OBC reservations in NEET, in Neil Aurelio Nunes v. Union explained that reservations are not an exception to merit but rather advance a holistic conception of merit

It's the last working day at the Supreme Court for 2021.

Which means it's time for me to recount the notable judgments of this year.

Thread 👇 The year began with the Supreme Court dismissing a challenge to the Central Vista project in Rajiv Suri v. DDA.

Justice Sanjiv Khanna in his dissenting opinion said the required public hearings had not been conducted and gave directions to publicize such a hearing.

1. I have a theory on Good™ judges and Great™ judges. Applying the logic of the theory to the theory itself, it could be a Great theory but perhaps not a Good theory. Bear with me on this thread, you'll see why. 2. To dive right into the center of it-

A Good judge grants effective relief.
A Great judge develops jurisprudence.

A Good judge needn't necessarily be a Great judge.
A Great judge needn't necessarily be a Good judge.

Today is the last working day of the Supreme Court for the year 2020.

In a year of many unprecedented events, the Supreme Court has laid down many precedents, in more than one sense of the term.

My list of the notables, but not necessarily in order of notability, is here👇 1. In re. problems and miseries of migrant workers: A petition seeking help for migrant workers affected by the COVID lockdown had been disposed off. Then the Court suo moto took up the miseries of workers and sought to oversee the facilities for the migrant workers.

As suggested by @BurgerrB let me tweet a little about the significance of Rajyotsava, with special focus on Bombay Karnataka as I come from Uttara Kannada district which used to be part of Bombay Presidency.

First, look this map to see how Karnataka was peiced together. One of the early demands for unification of Kannada speaking areas was by the Bellary Collecto, Sir Thomas Munro (later governor of Madras) though of course his motivation was to limit Maratha influence as part of their wars with the Peshwas.

Today marks ten years of me being a lawyer. I'd like to share 10 thoughts about going about life as a lawyer.

Please note this isn't about being a better lawyer. There are far more experienced and capable people who've been explaining that, especially in this lockdown. 1. Anything can be dressed up as legally right or wrong. As lawyers we get used to an amoral analytical rule based articulation of day to day issues. It's important to keep that legal analysis out of our personal lives.

Indians and naturalization on the basis of religion and ethnicity have had a strange encounter almost a hundred years ago. Strange by today's standards that is.
We're talking about United States v. Bhagat Singh Thind supreme.justia.com/cases/federal/… US Naturalization law at time said that only "Free White Men" or Africans could become citizens. Bhagat Singh Thind, a Sikh from Amritsar serving in the US Army sought citizenship claiming as a free white man.

The Supreme Court shuts for the winter vacation and will be back only in 2019. Which means its time for a thread of the important judgments of 2018. And there have been a few. Let me know if I miss out any 1. In K. Puttuswamy v. Union of India, the SC upheld Aadhaar while striking down some provisions of the act, which permitted private parties to insist upon Aadhaar data.
