Standardized exams are stressful and anxiety-provoking in the best of circumstances.
We manage the pressure because we know it is time-limited. We have a prep period and we have a test date. Usually, we have some control over that test date.

With a date in mind, we can pace ourselves. Space out questions, practice exams, content review. We can push ourselves knowing our timeline and strategy.
This makes the prep manageable.
Students taking the MCAT and Step exams have not had that option this year.

When I took the MCAT, I was working full-time. I would take a few days off each month for practice exams while trying to study around my work obligations. I could manage because I knew when I was taking the test. I could plan out expenses and finances.

Today, @AAMC_MCAT held a webinar that was unannounced on social media. The slides from this webinar, as well as additional files, were sent to us (unprompted) by several attendees so that we could see the data the AAMC presented.

As far as we can tell, it was billed as an update from AAMC to med schools on how the 2020-2021 AMCAS cycle is progressing. In the words of one attendee, however, “It was mostly AAMC attempting to get ahead of you all with messaging.” 2/
It is important to note that we’ve made extensive efforts at transparency. It is disappointing to learn that AAMC has not. We appreciate the allies who have reached out to share this and other information. We hope that someday applicants can be included in the conversation. 3/
In case you haven’t been following the med school admissions debacle, students are being pushed out of this admissions cycle, & it’s dire. Here’s some background.
-LSAT, GMAT, etc have gone remote due to COVID. The MCAT, however, is still required to be taken in person.

-Students who were scheduled to take the MCAT have had tests canceled, rescheduled, and canceled for months now. They can’t get through phone lines, and emails are not answered efficiently.

-A new MCAT format has been adopted (2 hrs shorter) to accommodate more testers in a day. The new exam is being offered 6 am to noon, noon to 6 pm, and 6 pm to midnight. 6 pm to midnight?? 😰😱
