Consider a woman who is told that her fetus has not developed a diaphragm. She chooses to spare her newborn the inevitable suffocation within minutes of birth by aborting as early as possible. Is she any less heroic than the mother who signs the paperwork for her 17yo to sign up
for military service during wartime even though she has conflicted views about the ‘mission’? I’ll ask this again after I make a few points. Will you consider my question again afterwards?
Pregnancy prior to 21 weeks (age of “viability”—you’ve heard this term before) is a woman
with an attached, growing grouping of cells that are as much a part of HER BODY as her own kidneys. She has the ability to donate a kidney and everyone likely survives and dies by other means later. If a woman could donate a healthy zygote or a fetus at that stage, we wouldn’t be
having this debate. She can’t. So here’s my take.
As much as we all love to assign emotional properties to the human heartbeat, it is not the beginning of life. Life truly does begin at conception (a zygote). That’s high school biology class information. Additionally my opinion
is that I believe each zygote is assigned a soul by God. I further believe that our soul comes with a personality and a mission known ONLY to our creator.
Back to science. That zygote is totally and completely dependent on the mother’s health and the attachment to and health of
the uterus until 21 weeks of gestation. None of us can survive outside our mother’s body until then and even then it takes a medical team and a lot of care and “luck” or perhaps “God-given destiny” to become as independent as a human can be at birth.
At such time that the embryo-
turned-fetuses reach viability at 21 weeks gestation, we get the wonderful and awe inspiring label of “baby”.
Prior to that, we are merely “potential babies”. “Kinetic” babies if you will. We need an external energy source (mother’s!) to push our development to that stage. A lot
of energy in many forms. Before then and even after then though, things can still go horribly wrong.
Abortion is the right of every woman after careful deliberation of all of the facts regarding the mother’s health, the zygote or embryo or fetus’ health and countless other
factors...possibly including the fate of the soul if you agree with my earlier opinion. Perhaps that soul will be called home to God’s eternal Heaven having fulfilled its mission as God intended. There are countless examples of souls called home from seemingly unnecessary means,
many of them much more horrific than abortion. War comes to mind.
Is a mother who spares her newborn with no diaphragm the inevitable suffocation within minutes of birth any less heroic than the mother who signs the paperwork for her 17yo to sign up for military service during
wartime and having conflicted views about the ‘mission’?
We can’t know our mission. Maybe we ought not know our mission. All we can do is breathe in and breathe out and make the decisions facing us as they arise. We can and do encourage pregnant women to consider all options
before abortion but when circumstances are morally and physically right to do so, she must have the legal and safe location, physicians and mental health professionals available.
Additionally, Roe v. Wade is settled precedent and cannot be overturned.
With love and God in
my ’heart’ I present to you my views on this painful topic.
