Official Opposition leader @AndreaHorwath to Ford: After over a year of doing his utmost to pick a fight with teachers, Ford has fallen silent as parents & students face the first province-wide education strike in 22 years. Will Ford fix the classroom crisis he’s created?
@AndreaHorwath Horwath: High school teachers & education workers have been crystal clear about how this can be resolved:
• Ford govt reverse reckless classroom cuts
• Ford govt reverse plans to increase class sizes and impose Alabama-style mandatory online learning.
@AndreaHorwath Horwath: Teachers are not alone in opposing these cuts.
Parents made it clear they don’t want their kids forced into online learning courses.
Students marched out of schools to protest larger class sizes and fewer course options.
Ford has no mandate to make these cuts.
@AndreaHorwath Horwath: Students and their parents have seen:
• courses vanish
• class sizes grow
• they’ve even learned that water in their schools may not be safe to drink.
I’d like to hear from Ford: what steps is he willing to take to bring people to the table?
(Ford won't answer)
@AndreaHorwath Horwath: This comes down to leadership, and the buck stops with Ford. He can’t sit silently and hope this goes away.
Will Ford show some leadership, stand in his place today, and say that he’ll do that?
(Ford fails to show leadership) #onpoli #onted
@AndreaHorwath Horwath: The former Environmental Commissioner has joined the Auditor General in slamming the Ford govt's made-to-fail climate change plan.
She described Ford's defense “complete nonsense.” Does Ford think she should also wait until 2030 before offering her opinion? #onpoli
@AndreaHorwath Horwath: When the world is coming together to confront the climate crisis Doug Ford is not just defending a plan described as “not based on sound evidence” but telling people demanding urgent action that he won’t listen until 2030. Why Ford dragging Ontario backwards? #onpoli
@AndreaHorwath Deputy Leader @SaraSinghMPP: This govt is appealing a ruling that overturned their attack on post secondary students and campuses. The courts were clear.
Will Ford abandon his unnecessary appeal and stop wasting taxpayer dollars with yet another losing lawsuit? #onpoli #onpse
@AndreaHorwath @SaraSinghMPP Sara Singh: The damage has already been done:
campus food banks closed; spaces for LGBTQ, racialized, and women closed.
Instead of taking students to court – again – will Ford stop his attacks and restore funding for the on campus programs he forced to close?
@AndreaHorwath @SaraSinghMPP NDP MPP @GurratanSingh: This govt confirmed the 30% cut to Legal Aid Ontario is permanent. Why is Ford plowing ahead with cuts that will hurt Ontarians, clog up our court system and cost more taxpayer dollars in the long run? #onpoli
@AndreaHorwath @SaraSinghMPP @GurratanSingh Gurratan Singh: The govt bill tears away the words “access to justice” and “low income” from anything to do with Legal Aid services. But that's exactly what Legal Aid is supposed to do. Why is Ford setting up low income people to fail in our justice system?
@AndreaHorwath @SaraSinghMPP @GurratanSingh NDP MPP @shaw_sandy: This govt's reckless cuts will leave a $5-billion hole when it comes to healthcare and education to pay for a tax giveaway to the rich. And what are everyday families going to see for their generous donation to the rich and powerful? $18. ....
Shaw con't:
That won’t even get you a popcorn combo at the theatre, but the conservative’s friends will get over $1000 dollars back in giveaways. Why does Ford want to give away thousands of dollars to the wealthy while gutting services for everyone else? #onpoli
Shaw: This govt's shameful plan to take money out of the pockets of hardworking families and put into the bank accounts of their rich friends and conservative insiders isn’t just going to make life harder for everyday families, it’s going to hurt our economy as well.
Shaw: On top of blowing a hole in our budget, Ford's reckless cuts will mean: fewer services, fewer front line workers like teachers, more kids in crumbling classrooms, longer waits to see the nurses and doctors.
And it means families are going to get further behind. #onpoli
