Today Senate of Uzbekistan approved participation of this country in #EurasianEconomicUnion #EEU with observer status. Earlier lower chamber - Oliy Majlis did it. What is important, observer status is only courtesy gesture to Russia, which was insisting on full membership.#threat

The future of #Uzbekistan and #EEU has been widely commented during the whole process. On February I took the voice in this discussion, underlining why Uzbekistan is not going to join #EEU and what will happen next. Humbly reccommend this reading. pism.pl/publications/P…

Why?

* Mirziyoyev, who received Russian political support during his succession to power, then began to limit Russian influence

* Uzbekistan will not join the EEU because it views it as an instrument of Russian political influence that brings only little economic benefit

What next?

* Uzbekistan will focus primarily on developing good relations with its neighbours and intensifying regional cooperation in Central Asia. It will also maintain balance in its relations with Russia and China, deriving benefits from cooperation with both countries.

Uzbekistan remain even bigger game changer in Central Asia than before due to #COVID19 pandemic. And I don`t mean only its #coronadiplomacy, but also foreign policy being factor of fostering regional cooperation and balancing role of #Russia and #China in Central Asia.END
