Thousands of dollars disappear overnight as scammers use myGov to steal super. #abc730 @pjmcgrth @alisonmcclymont #superannuation abc.net.au/news/2020-06-0…

“Cyber criminals just don't sleep. 365 days a year, all they're doing is looking for ways to steal your money.” - Angelee Basset #abc730

The Government’s early release super scheme lets Australians who’ve been hit by the #COVID19 economic crisis to withdraw $10,000 from their super this financial year, and another $10,000 after July 1. #abc730

“We discovered that there had been lodged applications for $10,000 of my super and almost $10,000 of my husband's super. We were both in shock.” - Angelee Basset #abc730

Authorities have told Angelee Basset that whoever was behind this attack set up fake myGov portals in her and her husband’s names. The attack was only possible because the myGov system allows multiple accounts to be set up in one person’s name. #abc730

The security risks of the online application process were laid bare in early May when the Australian Federal Police revealed criminals had infiltrated the scheme less than three weeks after it started. #abc730

“The AFP and the ATO were on to this very quickly and circumvented that form of fraud so that can’t take place again. What I can say though is that it was a very small number of people,” @SenatorHume, Assistant Minister for Superannuation. #abc730 #auspol
