Out of the 83 deaths in #Bihar, 13 victims were from Gopalganj district alone. Prime Minister #NarendraModi condoled the loss of lives in Bihar and UP.

Heavy rain with thunderstorms and lightning have been lashing various parts of #Bihar and #UttarPradesh for the last two weeks.

As the monsoon continues to remain intense over the Indo-Gangetic Plains, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has kept Bihar under Red warning— that urges authorities to 'take action' to minimise the impact— from Thursday to Saturday.

Apart from 13 deaths in Gopalganj, eight people were killed in Madhubani and Nawada district each, six each in Bhagalpur and Siwan, and five each in Banka, Darbhanga and East Champaran districts.

Even in Uttar Pradesh, out of 24 deaths, nine victims were from in Deoria district alone. Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner Sanjay Goyal told the news agency IANS, "Amid rain and thunderstorms, 24 people have died due to lightning strikes in various districts of the state today"

Lightning is the deadliest natural calamity, killing more people than even the floods and cyclones.

As per the data from the National Crime Record Bureau, an estimated 2500 people die due to lightning in India average every year.

Research suggests that a warming world could mean the more thunderstorms, and the trends so far agree.

Experts say that most of the lightning deaths are avoidable.
