🆘~65 people in distress off Libyan waters! A white rubber boat with ~65 people reached out to us as their engine is not working and water is entering the boat. They ask for urgent rescue. We alerted all authorities in #Europe, #Libya and #Tunisia.
On the phone, the so-called Libyan Coastguard told us that their vessel’s engine is broken & to call Tunisia.
The Tunisian Coastguard told us to call them back on Monday & said that today they don’t work. @guardiacostiera and @Armed_Forces_MT it is your duty to coordinate rescue!
22.10 CEST: We just reached again the ~65 people in distress. The situation is critical & urgent! They scream that people are about to die & that they need help immediately! There is no rescue in sight for them & we cannot reassure them that they will survive.
#EU, RESCUE NOW!
🆘 Don’t let them drown!!!
~65 people have been abandoned in distress a few miles away from Libyan shore. The EU pays Libyan militias to prevent people to reach Europe, but not to rescue people in Libyan SAR when they are drowning! @guardiacostiera & @Armed_Forces_MT rescue now!
Where are they?
We are very worried about the fate of the ~65 people, as we lost contact to them 12h ago. Then the situation was very critical, people were screaming & panicking. The sc Libyan CG is not reachable & MRCC Rome refuses responsibility for the militia Italy is paying.
