#TheSocialDilemma
My usage apx social media usage stats:
Till 2018 April, the time I completed my BBA from NMIMS, Mumbai
Under 2 hrs per day - Includes Facebook/FB, Instagram/FB, LinkedIn/LI, YouTube/YT & WhatsApp/WA
Contd.
2018 April to 2020 March, the active I was actively working at 2 diff formal jobs in Bangalore
Btw 3-4 hrs per day - Includes IG, LI, WA, YT & FB
2020 Mar to present, the Corona Virus Pandemic days when I'm not working formally anywhere
Btw 5-6 hrs per day, breaking this down
IG - 3+ hrs
WA - 1+ hrs
YT - 1 hr
FB - 20 mins
LI - 20 mins
Twitter - 10 mins
Here are interesting facts:
- I don't have FB, LI & Twitter apps on my phone rn
- I've disabled notifications for all these platforms, if they were on the usage would have been significantly higher
- I don't follow any meme page and very few influencers on IG, had I been following my engagement on IG would have been much higher
- I was not into subscribing & liking videos on YT earlier, my recommendations have improved heavily post I did that
- I had done a Vipassana course in 2018 May, stayed 12 days without any usage of phone, books, music and in complete silence
Some points of actions for myself/suggestions for you maybe:
- Check your social media activity, time spent online at least twice a week. Keep a track!
- Fix a time budget and reduce social media activity 10% every week until you match the time budget
- Don't fall for ads or promotions online, on Google, IG, YT, LI. If you find the ad worthy, search for the same thing and go through it. This upsets the algorithms
- Educate your loved ones on the ill effects of social media
Other stuff:
- Social media doesn't just benefit from your data, it benefits from data analysis which improves every moment
- AI/ML maybe not better than human strengths, but they're far better than human weaknesses
- Only social media & illegal drugs, identify consumers as "users"
- FAANG & other social media ventures deal in "Human Futures"
They are changing; who you are, what you think, how you think and ultimately; what you do, how you act/react
- Politicians across the world are using social media heavily to manipulate the brains of civilians. The world is more polarized now than ever.
- The Corona spread in USA was multiplied due to fake news spread about the virus
- Fake news spreads much faster on social media, than actual news
Fake news is a threat to humanity, it has resulted in riots, mob lynchings & political turnarounds around the globe
