Founded by the #Karabakh khans at the end of the 18th century as a vacation destination for the Khan’s family members,the city’s name literally translates from #Azerbaijani to “the village of the Khans”. In 1918,the Soviet government renamed the city after a bolshevik Stepan ⤵️
In September 1923, the city was renamed Stepan Shaumyan "Stepanakert", but in 1991, by the decision of the Supreme Soviet of Azerbaijan, the former name of the city "Khankendi" was restored.
