#Khankendi city means “village of the Khan” since it was founded by Ibrahim Khalil Khan.
#Khankendi was renamed by Soviet government.
After regaining independence #Azerbaijan🇦🇿 returned the real name to its historical land.

Although there were no Armenians or Russians in Khankendi in 1813, in 1847 there was a house and an Armenian church inhabited by 80 Armenian and 52 Russian families. Nevertheless, in 1847 the settlement was officially named Khankendi on the maps of Russia #KhanendiNotStepanakert

Founded by the #Karabakh khans at the end of the 18th century as a vacation destination for the Khan’s family members,the city’s name literally translates from #Azerbaijani to “the village of the Khans”. In 1918,the Soviet government renamed the city after a bolshevik Stepan ⤵️

In September 1923, the city was renamed Stepan Shaumyan "Stepanakert", but in 1991, by the decision of the Supreme Soviet of Azerbaijan, the former name of the city "Khankendi" was restored.
