2021 Water Quality Report

A discussion about PFAS contamination and transparency by governmental officials...

Report 👇
tucsonaz.gov/water/annual-w…

Here a teaser. More to follow over the next few days, a hint for what follows: "Forever & Accumulative"

"All [~30 billion gallons] water delivered by Tucson Water to its 722,000 customers each year is groundwater pumped from area aquifers." Using "206 active production or standby groundwater wells."👇

The picture in the previous tweet is from #Tucson's 2000-2050 Water Plan.

A useful document for understanding Tucson's water distribution system. 👇

All the #aquifers (#groundwater) in the Tucson Basin are connected... 👇
tucsonaz.gov/water/groundwa…

The Water Quality Report, shows this representation of separated aquifers... While, also making the dubious statement: "Tucson Water began transitioning from groundwater reliance to a renewable supply
from the Colorado River". #transparency #drought

Remember the teaser?

"To ensure Tucson Water continues to only
deliver clean and safe drinking water to its
customers, we recently transitioned water
supplied from TARP from the potable drinking water
system to the recycled water system."

Any water supplied the Reclaimed Water System is delivered to schools, parks and golf courses (irrigation) and to the Santa Cruz River. Where it potentially percolates down to the #aquifer (#groundwater) below. Potentially contaminating Tucson's central well field and beyond.

1000s of water wells blanket the Tucson Basin in addition to @TucsonWater's central well field.

Remember - Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are #forever and #Accumulative...

Tomorrow new @EPA Health Advisory for #PFAS... Stay tuned!

While you're waiting...

Okay, briefly, @EPA has issued new HAs, Health Advisories for #PFAS 👇
epa.gov/sdwa/drinking-…

From @cityoftucson @TucsonWater website:
"The current health advisory for PFOA and PFOS is set at 70 parts per trillion – one part per trillion is roughly equivalent to one drop of water in 20 Olympic-sized swimming pools." 👇

Waiting for @cityoftucson @TucsonWater 2021 CEC Report - Contaminants of Emerging Concern

Previous reports 👇

So, here's the problem.
"Rising tide of PFAS contamination"👇

Why PFAS chemical levels are rapidly rising in Tucson groundwater 👇
tucson.com/news/local/why…

"The Santa Cruz River Heritage Project will use existing infrastructure to bring a portion of that reclaimed water to a location farther south, where it will flow in the riverbed and percolate through the ground to enter the aquifer."👇
tucsonaz.gov/water/wwe201905

"Once in the aquifer this water is *stored for later use*, effectively 'keeping it local.'" 👇
tucsonaz.gov/water/wwe201905

The Santa Cruz River Heritage Project: "The Santa Cruz River Heritage Project is an excellent example of how Tucson Water continues to ensure reliable water resources for our community. The project adds up to 2.8 million gallons recycled water daily" 👇
tucsonaz.gov/water/SCRHP

The Santa Cruz River Heritage Project 👇

More to follow tomorrow! In the meantime...👇

Okay #PFAS 🧵 continues.
Here a map showing the plume flow NW of the airport and SE of the TARP Facility and a zoom to the Legend (orders of 10x).

Next the December 2021 PFAS Report page1 or cover from @TucsonWater.
Note the discussion about the Santa Cruz River & the "TW Recycled [reclaimed] Water System" left side. Right side disclaimer Re: AZPDES Permit to discharge 7.952 MG (million gallons) water into the Santa Cruz.

Remember the new @EPA HA? Along with the legend from the previous tweet.

And here the TARP PFAS Report shown later in the report...
Disregard the red horizontal line it is misplaced and doesn't match the Legend!

Also the Legend states that the MRL Method Reporting Limit 2.0 ppt, Thus the Zeros are unverified since the method can only detect down to 2.0 ppt!

Remember the teaser?

"To ensure Tucson Water continues to only
deliver clean and safe drinking water to its
customers, we recently transitioned water
supplied from TARP from the potable drinking water
system to the recycled water system."

Remember, "continues to *only*
deliver clean and safe drinking water to its
customers"

"Tucson Water recently shut down a treatment plant after discovering it was sending water contaminated with chemical compounds to thousands of residents...."

The 🧵 continues tomorrow!

🧵 continues: "Thomure outlined the 'future threat' of PFAS encroaching on Tucson’s central wellfield with a map illustrating how the substances appear to be 'moving downgradient'"
Map via - Tucson Del Sur News 👇
tucsondelsur.news/2019/12/counci…

"Thomure assured the council that all water currently delivered by the water utility to residents is safe and the water utility has adopted strict target concentrations for five [PFASs] – relative to other states across the nation." Map via 👇
tucsondelsur.news/2019/12/counci…

"'Those are our targets, the water is always below those targets, therefore it is safe,' Thomure said."

Click on the map and zoom... PFAS contamination is widespread throughout #Tucson

First the map Legend alongside the new @EPA Health Advisory - HA

Here various areas of the map zoomed in.

Delivery of PFAS contaminated #water through @cityoftucson @pimaarizona recycled/reclaimed water system is I'll advised. This activity will only spread PFAS, to eventually percolate to #aquifer #groundwater throughout the reclaimed water system throughout the Tucson Basin

Remember - Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are #forever and #Accumulative...
