Does the focus on building skills mean we might be missing a trick when it comes to improving wider org performance? No clue - but I bet Charles Jennings @charlesjennings has some insight & answers! I’ll listen in here at @LearnTechUK and keep you posted, shall I? #LT23UK #T3S2
Covering the session with me is the one and only Ben Waldman @LandD_Ben - so you KNOW I’m already having ALL THE FUN. Let the tweeting begin #LT23UK #T3S2
And guess who the chair is?!?! It’s a friendly face. The one and only @ZahraCJ! Hey Zarah!!! 👋🏽👋🏽👋🏽 #LT23UK #T3S2
“If we’re only focusing on skills, if we’re only focusing on up-skilling or re-skilling individuals we’re missing out on the bigger picture of learning. Most learning occurs as part of working” @charlesjennings starting the session off with a massive mic drop #LT23UK #T3S2
When L&D practitioners were asked what they thought 2023 trends in L&D would be the top answer was upskilling and reskilling. When @charlesjennings posed the same qn to #ChatGPT the answers were quite different. Are we really missing something as a profession? #LT23UK #T3S2
“Engagement surveys don’t tell us about performance” says @charlesjennings at @LearnTechUK. They tell us about engagement, retention, mental & physical well-being & inclusion - but should not be used as a performance metric. #LT23UK #T3S2
“We can train people as much as we like. We can upskill as much as we like but if we don’t get rid of systemic barriers we are fighting a losing battle when it comes to performance at work.” @charlesjennings at @LearnTechUK #LT23UK #T3S2
So what should we be doing? To create value we must adopt a systemic approach to learning. That involves a performance mindset, analysis, co-creation with key stakeholders, solutions integrated into work and metrics that are actually owned by stakeholders! #LT23UK #T3S2
Next time we as L&D professionals get a request for training, instead of going away and building training that is focused on individual upskilling we need to start with the work. We need to start with performance. We need to be close to the work & the workers. #LT23UK #T3S2
Specifically, @charlesjennings encourages us to:
⭐️Ask what is the work to be done
⭐️See & understand how people do that work
⭐️Break that work into tasks
⭐️Learn what high performers do that average performers don’t
⭐️Build solutions that increase performance
#LT23UK #T3S2
And @charlesjennings leaves us with this final nugget of wisdom to close off his session at @LearnTechUK , which I think is a great reflection and challenge for us all: Are we in the #learning business or are we in the #performance business #LT23UK #T3S2
