Two related fallacies (upon which people who live under dictatorship are gored): False binary + fallacy of false choice
A false binary is when the options are presented as an either/or choice between two, and strictly two, proposals. They make it look like there are *only* two possible outcomes, when in fact there can be many others.
A fallacy of false choice is when two (or more) options are provided, but they all lead to the same outcome for you. They make it *look* like there's a choice, but regardless, the outcome for you is the same.
Now consider: "We have to legitimize this dictator, it's the only way to avoid WWIII".
- False binary: As if these are the only two options
- Fallacy of false choice: Either way (war or legitimization) people who live under the dictator are screwed
- False binary: As if these are the only two options
