Have been following @sidagarwal's #FiftyTrees and was nudged by @SloganMurugan to join in soon. So, I'm now joining the lovely @AratiKumarRao to post photos of #NammaOorinaMaragalu #NOM #trees

1/50: Tabebuia rosea (Pink Poui), photographed in Basavanagudi ImageImage
2/50: African Tulip Tree (Spathodea campanulata)
Image 1: Jungle Myna feeding on the flowers (from Magadi Road)
Image 2: All the red-tops in this scape are African Tulip trees that have just come into bloom in September (from Arekere)

3/50: Gulmohar (Delonix regia) photographed near the State Central Library in Cubbon Park
Contrary to popular belief, the Gulmohar is not a native species; it comes from Madagascar.

4/50: Colville's Glory (Colvillea racemosa) photographed in Lalbagh.

When not in bloom, it’s very easy to mistake this tree for a Gulmohar. These trees are in bloom right now, so go see them!

5/50: My most favourite tree of all the summer blooms in Bangalore - Java Cassia (Cassia javanica) from Lalbagh.

The most prominent Java Cassia in the city is in the erstwhile Minsk Square, now called the Cubbon Park Metro junction.

6/50: Star Gooseberry (Phyllanthus acidus) from Lalbagh

Many memories go deep and far with this :) My uncle and aunt had about 8 of these trees in their garden and I spent all my holidays with them 🧡

7/50: Shorea Talura (Shorea roxburghii) from Arekere

Was thrilled to find this Endangered species close to where I live :) The flowers are very pretty and have a lovely aroma too.

8/50: If only I could bottle up the heady aroma of the Blackboard Tree (Alstonia scholaris)! These dense green bunches of flowers are a treat to all senses :)

And, it is also called the Indian Devil Tree!

#FiftyTrees #BangaloreTrees #Trees #NammaOorinaMaragalu ImageImageImage
9/50: Another tree I like very much - the Albizia Lebbeck - commonly known as the Siris. Some mean, sexist people named it ‘Woman’s Tongue Tree’ because of all the noise the dry seed pods make.

How pretty are the flowers!

10/50: Probably one of the most beautiful and important trees on Bangalore's avenues - the Pongam (Millettia pinnata or Pongamia pinnata) - called Honge Mara in Kannada.

Photos from Indiranagar.
And, always, look down too! :)

11/50: Pride of Burma (Amherstia nobilis) with its very pretty chandelier-style flowers

This tree is from Lalbagh, and I've seen one more in Koramangala; but I'm not sure how common this tree is around the city.

12/50: Garcinia indica, or what we all know as Kokum :)

This tree was photographed in Lalbagh, close to the pigeon madhouse.

13/50: The sheer delight of being around a Copperpod Tree (Peltophorum pterocarpum) in bloom, and the yellow carpet it lays out on the ground below.

From Lalbagh and Cubbon Park

14/50: This stunning Banyan (Ficus benghalensis) that people who go to Turahalli might recognise.

Thanks, Arun (@Kephalos on Instagram - follow him!), for helping me with the ID!

15/50: Another Ficus - a Ficus glomerata from Lalbagh. Also, what I call a Giant Bat Magnet.

I have the good fortune of living near a magnificent glomerata 😊

16/50: Schefflera actinophylla, commonly known as the Umbrella Tree or Octopus Tree

Photographed near MN Krishna Rao Park in Basavanagudi

17/50: Saraca declinata, known as Red Saraca

The tree is native to Thailand and Burma, and this was photographed in Lalbagh.

18/50: Swietenia mahagoni - Small-leaved Mahogany.

Cubbon Park is the best place to see this tree, especially this road lined with mahoganies. See the pretty leaves with the off-centre vein, and the flowers that have a lovely, sweet aroma.

19/50: Terminalia catappa or the Indian Almond, photographed in Arekere

This is the season when the leaves turn bright red before falling, and it is an amazing sight!

20/50: Cassia grandis or the Pink Shower Tree, from Cubbon Park

#FiftyTrees #Trees #BangaloreTrees ImageImageImage
21/50: Cannon Ball Tree (Couroupita guianensis)

Photos from Cubbon Park, Malleshwaram and Singapore!

The flowers are called Nagalinga pushpa in Kannada, and the tree itself is considered auspicious.

22/50: Jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia)

Photos from Cubbon Park, Lalbagh and MN Krishna Rao Park

23/50: Bauhinia purpurea, also called the Camel’s Foot Tree because of the unique shape of the leaves.

Photographs from Indiranagar and Lalbagh

24/50: Castanospermum australe, commonly known as the Moreton Bay Chestnut or Blackbean, and is native to Australia.

Photographs from a beautiful lane in Cubbon Park that’s lined up with these tall trees. And a seedpod that almost landed on me once.

#FiftyTrees #BangaloreTrees ImageImageImage
25/50: Millingtonia hortensis, commonly known as the Indian Cork Tree or Tree Jasmine.

And so aptly named Aakasha Mallige (jasmine of the sky) in #Kannada.

Don’t miss the gorgeous floral carpets after a bout of rain.

#FiftyTrees #BangaloreTrees #Trees ImageImageImageImage
26/50: The magnificent Rain Tree (Albizia saman)

Every single time I walk past a Rain Tree, I stop, ogle, and send a silent prayer.

These beauties are from Commissariat Road and the close up photos are from Cubbon Park.

#FiftyTrees #BangaloreTrees #Trees ImageImageImageImage
It’s impossible to talk about Rain Trees and not discuss canopy shyness or crown shyness.

Look at those gorgeous maps in the sky? ♥️

Photographs from Cubbon Park

And these mighty Rain Trees from St Marks Road

#FiftyTrees #BangaloreTrees #Trees Image
Going to break the rule and post this - Rain Trees in the rain from beautiful Mysuru

#FiftyTrees #Trees #Mysore Image
And this Rain Tree that many of us recognise so well, from NGMA

#FiftyTrees #BangaloreTrees #Trees #NGMA ImageImage
27/50: Queen’s Crepe-Myrtle or Pride of India (Lagerstroemia speciosa)

There are very few things as beautiful as a crepe-myrtle in bloom. No, really.

Photographs from Arekere.

#FiftyTrees #Trees #BangaloreTrees #Pink ImageImageImageImage
Look at how pretty the flowers are!

Queen’s Crepe-Myrtle (Lagerstroemia speciosa)

28/50: Markhamia lutea, also called the Nile Tulip or Nile Trumpet Tree

Don’t miss the pretty yellow carpets the tree creates!

Photographed in Indiranagar
