I’ve been revisiting this @farnamstreet episode with @tobi for weeks now. It’s so good. Here are 10 takeaways.
fs.blog/tobi-lutke/
1/ Hire for future potential, not current skill.
2/ Make you company the destination, not the city. When new hires relocate, they’re moving to Shopify, not Ottawa.
3/ In the future we’ll look back and be embarrassed by the how primitive even the best companies are run today.
4/ Nothing unifies a team like a common emergent and worthy battle.
5/ Managing culture is tricky. You don’t want inauthentic people trying to conform to an articifical standard.
6/ Live your values, even in the smallest details. If you’re going to design stunning user interfaces, why would you have a nonintuitive and frustrating coffee maker in the office?
7/ Build resiliency in your teams by throwing curveballs. They’ll be better for it when the unexpected comes—and it always comes.
8/ The best way to improve at your craft is by learning broadly, and the best way to learn is by reading.
9/ Stay humble. None of your team members will ever make more or bigger mistakes than you will.
10/ Time allocation of a CEO:
—Invest time in employees (1-1s)
—Read
—Write
—Shape environment
—Recruit
