“Sticks and stones may break my bones
But names will never harm me.”

is directly at odds with

“The pen is mightier than the sword”

The fact that PR firms exists shows the second is right.
It is very easy to hurt people with just words, and they certainly do not need to lead to violence.

Your reputation can be harmed by words, just as it can be bolstered.
Thoughts and words are free and rightly protected.

However, to use that as an argument that words are therefore “harmless” is a logical fallacy.

If anything, it shows they *do* have power and therefore that power needs to be acknowledged.
Because those who have reason to protect themselves against that power would like nothing more than to curtail it.
The flip side of that is you cannot pretend your words have no effect: you are responsible for them.
