Thank you for starting the conversation @dawgs_my - you are stating policies here, not really what your goal is for the end result. Let's discuss each of these and see if I can understand your goals and see if we can agree on policies to reach these goals.
I’ll do one a day, as I have to go to work and be a productive citizen. We’ll tackle your “stop the murder of babies” goal today. From that, I think you mean “stop abortion”, am I correct? cc: @DrJenGunter @PPFA @DrLeanaWen
As we know from history, outlawing abortion does not stop abortion, it only makes it dangerous. Here is an article on the danger - ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…
So, one good way to “stop the murder of babies” (using your phrase) is to reduce the number of unintended pregnancies. Can we agree on that point?
Colorado has a great program offering free birth control to teens. Pregnancy and abortion rates dropped significantly! Can we agree that we should offer free birth control to everyone who wants it? denverpost.com/2017/11/30/col…
But we don’t want to stop there! Your goal is to “stop the murder of babies” – there is more we can do. Did you know that U.S. infant mortality is horrendous compared to other industrialized nations? healthsystemtracker.org/chart-collecti…
What can we do about infant mortality? We could provide great prenatal and postnatal care to every pregnant person in this country very inexpensively. Community Health Centers provide great primary care for <$1,000/person/year.
We should fully fund community health centers to provide this care as a public service. This would go a long way toward reducing the death of babies. Would you go for this health plan? forbes.com/sites/carolynm…
When does a baby quit being a baby? I think the young adult years is a good time, because our brains are developing up to adulthood. So do you want just live babies or healthy babies? It is better for this country to have healthy babies.
So to have healthy babies, we need to do things like keep a clean water supply (lead exposure kills brain cells). Can we replace our aging water supply infrastructures, like in Flint? Surely you’ll support that policy?
And again, providing basic primary care goes a long way toward keeping babies healthy. Thanks for starting a good conversation @dawg_my. I look forward to seeing your response on these great initiatives.
Consider joining wethepeople.org - a bipartisan group crowd sourcing to push policy initiatives that will help our country. Tomorrow I’ll tackle your “stop mass immigration” problem. Have a great day! 🙂
