Made a pilgrimage recently to Cellular Jail, Port Blair. These are the cells where those condemned to death by hanging were sent for the last few days. Three prisoners were hanged together. 1/n
(1) the gallows - often three prisoners were hanged together (2) the place where the condemned did their last rituals. Many just sang Vande Mataram (wonder if the prisoners in the cells could hear them). 2/n
The rows of prison cells. Only a part of complex survives as a memorial. Reasonably well kept. 3/n
This is what one of the cells looks like. Each prisoner has only three possessions - a metal dish, a mug and an earthen port to relieve himself. 4/n
The prisoners were moved around but Savarkar's cell can be identified as it had a double doors and overlooked the gallows ( done deliberately in order to break him). He was kept so isolated that he didn't know for two years that his brother was also there 5/n
The prisoners were subjected to inhuman conditions and forced labour. This an oil press that some of them were forced to run all day without rest. Any transgression was brutally punished. 6/n
Lists of Revolutionaries who were sent there. Sachindra Nath Sanyal was sent to Kala Pani twice. Once for Ghadar (released in post Jallianwala amnesty) & once for Kakori. Bengalis dominate followed by Punjabis. 7/n
The Cellular Jail is a grim place but from its roof one can see the Indian flag flying across the inlet. It is quite a moving sight..... 9/n
A nationalist paper called Swarajya was published from Allahabad (Prayagraj) during 1907-10. Its publishers were sent Kala Pani. This was the original @SwarajyaMag 10/n
