Steven Pinker (b. 1954) in The Blank Slate, 2002. Modernism is a cult, and a dangerous one at that. Modernism in architecture destroys towns and cities, ruins the surrounding countryside and the lives of millions of people who have to endure it.

The cult of the Blank Slate and the malleability of man (man as a program not as a biological creature) is still the dominant paradigm in all of Modernity, from economics to education to medicine to criminal law, and especially and oppressively so, in the field of Architecture.

Everyone knows green space increases value, but it has to be high quality green space, it has to feel ”built up”, tight, cared for. The "Tower in a park" kind of green, like the urban parsley between parking lots and next to roads actually decrease the value of nearby properties.
One well placed pocket park increases the value of a neighborhood more than access to a far larger but poorly laid out park. This holds true for all kinds of properties, private homes as well as offices or public buildings.

Interesting on how Ice Age hunters were able not only to kill huge numbers of animals at a single point, but also to store the meat for later consumption. This must have meant possibilities of very large concentrations of human populations. (Kirkpatrick Sale, After Eden, 2006)

The traditional way of showing that your shop is open for business in Japan is by hanging a cloth curtain, a noren (暖簾 or のれん), in front of it, a tradition dating back at least to the 8th century. Practical, economical, and beautiful. Let's have a look.
In an era before printed advertising, plastic paints and expensive showy signage, the noren was an efficient way of shielding the entrance to your shop from the dusty street, cold winter winds or harsh summer sun. The earliest and most traditional noren were made of linen.
At first they were plain, or with simple shapes or patterns, but as literacy really took of in the 17th century people could write the name of the master, the logo of their business, or any character that symbolized their craft or wares.

One of the most chilling abandoned places in the world is France's Red Zone, or "Zone Rouge".

Over 100 years ago, the First World War so devastated the landscape here that people are still forbidden to enter, & the zone has become a ghostly & overgrown place.
As the First World War drew to a close in 1918, Europe had to face the consequences of the most apocalyptic conflict ever seen.

18 million people were dead, while towns & cities lay in ruins. Disease & hunger ravaged the population.
For France and Belgium, the countries that hosted the war's main theatre, the Western Front, there was another consequence: large parts of the country were now uninhabitable wastes of shell-churned mud.

Competence is knowing what to do in a situation and how to do it. It is not the same as excellence.
Excellence is dependent on other people, like judges, examiners, teachers, assessors, inspectors, auditors. But we can't control these people and whether they think we're excellent or not.

Having started off in fine fashion by trolling the opposition *without actually achieving much thru the trolling*, Pinker then gets into what we could call #AcademicStrut, the Declaration Of Ego, dressed up over-intellectually. Let's examine this part:
1/ @sapinker's well-known problems with philosophy show up badly here. For one thing, the crucial point is dignity is an *intersubjective* concept, a social one appealing to conscience & group effort. Not just 'subjective', as Pinker wants to damn it. A complex but vital point.

#b 'Teknik menjawab' is not a series of rituals that you carry out to secure an A in the exam. You don't get guaranteed an A just through superficial actions like highlighting keywords or drawing meniscus or inserting isi tersirat.
The problem is students and teachers treat teknik menjawab as some sort of pseudo magical ritualistic gestures that will bring a certain outcome. Draw a pentagram, slaughter a chicken, and your wish will be granted.
Some remote Pacific Islanders in 1940s came in contact with Allied and Japanese soldiers who were more technologically advanced and thought the soldiers were gods who had many "cargo" (canned food, electronics, modern stuff)
