Look, I don’t know if Mike Gillis is the answer. But if he wants to walk in the door and snap half of management Thanos style, that might be the most important part of his job.
Nicholson has been dropping Ken Holland references every chance he gets and we can debate his pluses and minuses but one thing I can’t see is Hockey Canada Holland firing all his other Hockey Canada buddies. That’s a problem.

They’ve rebuilt the players 5 times over. Same with the coaching staff. They’ve even replaced the trainers. Everything’s been rebuilt.

They can spin their yarn about Chiarelli isolating himself, conveniently absolving themselves of blame, but if Chia did isolate at the end, the real roster mistakes were well before then.

As soon as you say that A) Chiarelli isolated, we had no control and also B) Koskinen was a group decision, you’ve given away the game.
The current management team is in survival mode & would prefer not to wear any of this. Hire someone new, everyone keeps on keeping on.

Problem is this frustrating season will likely be the 2nd best season in 10 yrs. Who built this trash-fire pre-Chiarelli? Why are we expecting they’ll be better now?

Connor McDavid is standing there facing the music after dragging this team single-handedly to something resembling a playoff race, clearly frustrated, and I’m left wondering why he has to answer for anything.

New idea: let’s stop doing player interviews after the game & just interview every person in management who brought this team to this story state over the last decade+. They should wear this. Game in and out.
Instead of bringing in someone who can fit “Oiler culture”, bring in someone who can fit “McDavid culture”.
Because McDavid hasn’t ever blamed anyone but himself when he’s obviously the least to blame.
Management’s “Oiler culture” appears to be exact opposite.
