Surprised by all the hate for Jaime... personally thought that scene played perfectly to the character arc that's been building for 7.5 seasons. #GameOfThrones
He's been on a redemptive arc, but last season he finally realized just how toxic Cersei is and how co-dependent he's been on her.
This season, it's been very clear he's finally come to a place of remorse about all the awful stuff he's done. And he's looked slightly lost because of it. He doesn't know who he is without Cersei. He doesn't know how to atone for all his sins.
There were so many little moments with Brienne in last night's episode where he looked ashamed - like he knows he doesn't deserve the love of this woman who is totally awesome, but he admires her and cares for her and likes the person she thinks he can be.
So when he hears that Cersei killed a dragon and has a shot at winning, it's painfully obvious that Dany's going to torch King's Landing if Cersei doesn't surrender, and he knows she'll never surrender.
He risked everything once before to save King's Landing from being torched by a Targaryen. Stands to reason he'd be willing to risk it all again, even if it means confronting/capturing or even killing the woman he loved/loves.
To me, it seems really obvious he didn't go to JOIN Cersei - he was willing to stay in Winterfell and let Dany's army take Cersei out, knowing full well what would happen. And his character has never shown any signs of "fair weather" loyalty.
His parting words to Brienne felt like a confession - he admits and accepts all the evil he's done out of his addiction to this horrible woman. He hates himself for it. But he's not crawling back to Cersei. He's going to try to right his wrongs. His whole arc has built to that.
His parting words to Brienne felt like the romantic cliche of saying something hurtful to someone you love so they won't follow you on a suicide mission. And the vagueness is so that the showrunners don't have to show their hand too early.
BUT the fact that he tells Brienne he's "hateful" gave me strong vibes that he knows he can only save King's Landing by taking out Cersei... and he hates himself for that too, but knows he needs to do it. That scene personally got me hyped AF to see how this arc ends.
TL;DR: Jaime has the best arc of any character on the show, IMO. S8 has made lots of mistakes, but I don't think he's one of them. I think we're seeing his arc coming to a head, and it's gonna be great. Fingers crossed they don't botch it, but I have a lot of hope. #GameofThrones
