Time for a new Guess Who I Am. #9. While working at @Shell I invented the sticky fly strip then in academia spent my long career fighting radicals even at the age of 92. #longevity @aginghighlights @AGE Image
@Shell @aginghighlights @AGE Kudos to @VenkMallikarjun. This is indeed Professor Denham Harman.
While still in medical school at Stanford, Denham Harman came up with the “Free Radical Theory of Aging.”
The Free Radical Theory blames aging on unpaired electrons that damage DNA through oxidation.
This theory suggests that oxidation is especially strong in mitochondria, because that is where most free radicals are generated.
Through the 1970s and 1980s, Harman and others tested whether antioxidants would impact the lifespan of animals. The results were mostly disappointing. Nonetheless, the free-radical theory is still widely extolled by purveyors of pills and drinks.
Professor Harman's wife once told me her husband had been taking high doses of alpha-lipoic acid for most of his life to quench free radicals. Considering that he worked tirelessly on his research well into his 90s, I suppose, at the very least, it didn’t hurt.
