Guess who I am #10. Descended from 🇮🇹, I am a rebel scientist who quit 🚬 in 3rd grade, then used a simple organism to figure out how genes are regulated, and how gene regulation regulates lifespan. 🍻#longevity #lifespanbook Image
I first met Leonard Guarente when he came to Sydney on holiday to visit my boss, Ian Dawes. We ended up at a dinner together, and you better believe I made sure I was sitting near him.
Guarente engaged me with curiosity and enthusiasm, and told me about his interest in yeast as model organisms for aging. If we can't solve the problem of aging in yeast, he told him, we had no chance in humans.
Fast forward a few years, and the work that has been done on yeast has helped set the stage for the veritable revolution upon which we are now engaged.
Many people had a role in this revolution, but perhaps no one so much as Lenny, through whose lab came a who's-who of researchers whose work is fundamentally changing the way we think about aging.
