A thread dedicated to international news reporting on events between 1980-1991. The #SNM's struggle for #Somaliland's liberation, the genocide perpetrated by #Somalia's Siad Barre against innocent civilians, and the events that led to the restoration of Somaliland's independence.
Lest we forget why the #SNM picked up arms in defence of #Somaliland civilians against brutal war of obliteration waged by Barre's #Somalia:

"The local gov. council is to be "reconstituted" and the local schools "diluted" by bringing in non-Isaaq children from refugee camps..." Image
"... at least 30 people were killed by the army during one day's rioting last week in the provincial capital, Hargeisa".

If you think this happened in 88 you would be wrong, article is dated March 6, 1982.

Formation of #SNM was only a response to gov. oppression of #Somaliland Image
Article continued...

"The Somali National Movement says that it is trying to contact the Hawiye in the hope of forming a united front."

@TheEconomist Feb/1983

Reports story of how #Puntland's #SSDF fighting with Ethiopians and helping them occupy two Somali towns, led to them losing Somali people's support.

Same article describes #Somaliland's #SNM's daring raid freeing political prisoners in Mandheera. ImageImage

Its coming up to #26June, #Somaliland's first independence day. A thread in celebration is apt, sharing international reporting on Somaliland finally attaining independence from Britain:
#Somaliland was the 16th African state to become independent. Somaliland became an independent country before many African states:

- Congo: independence date 30/6/1960
- #Somalia: 1/7
- Nigeria: 1/10
- Algeria: 5/7/1962
- Uganda: 9/10
- Kenya: 12/12/1963
- #Djibouti: 27/6/1977
Article by @guardian, published 19-June-1960, less than a week before independence of #Somaliland highlights both the glaring problems with the union of the 2 states (SL & #Somalia) but also the fact that it was people of SL who pushed for the union against all odds & at any cost ImageImage
