Several Dem candidates have talked about cooperatives as fruitful business models that should be encouraged through policy. Here’s a concrete example of one in action (as experienced by me, a consumer).
Because of the accident of which neighborhood I live in, I get my electricity through a co-op. The rates are great, the service is excellent...it's like getting electricity from any old company.
The only difference is that every consumer is also a co-owner, which means that any profits the company makes go back to us, the consumers. So far that means about $200 a year that will end up in my pocket rather than some person on Wall Street.
Co-ops aren't a panacea nor are they always perfect, but they're a mode of economic activity that is far more egalitarian than consolidated corporate capitalism, and which also has a long history in the US and elsewhere.
