Brazil is burning.

It is a climate emergency.

Climate chaos knows no borders.

Our chickens are coming home to roost.

We need a #GreenNewDeal starting yesterday.

Thread. /1
Don’t forget the CIA’s role in installing Bolsonaro.

Brazil would not be burning if we in the U.S. followed Ike’s warning and contained our own military-industrial complex.

Let that sink in. /2
Our constitutional crisis in the expansion of executive power & secrecy, particularly in national security agencies and our military-industrial-resource-extraction complex, plays a key role in driving climate crisis.

We can’t stop climate catastrophe until we #CloseTheCIA. /3
President Eisenhower warned us this would happen.

Before running to replace Pelosi as San Francisco’s voice in Congress, #ShahidVsPelosi wrote a book chapter on Ike’s warning presaging militarized police, surveillance dragnets, and rights violations. /4
Our antipathy for the Criminal Intelligence Agency is not new.

Nor are the CIA’s crimes against humanity.

Some of the Agency’s worst criminals now direct it under Trump, who is an open fascist. /5
Usually forgotten is the CIA’s role in enabling:

📌 the war on drugs
📌 mass incarceration
📌 militarized policing

Remember Gary Webb?

If not, take a moment to read about the history he unearthed, and what happened to him as a result. /6
"The Brazilian President was accompanied to the CIA HQ by Sérgio Moro, the US-trained Inquisitor-Judge turned Justice Minister...responsible for the politically motivated jailing of...Lula da Silva, who was certain to win until his forced removal...." brasilwire.com/in-plain-sight…

We agree with @ggreenwald that “there’s almost nothing worse you can do if you’re participating in public discourse than to deliberately and casually smear somebody while knowing that you have no evidence.” greenwald.substack.com/p/an-ugly-war-… (11:44) Thread. /1
We’re grateful to @ryangrim and @theintercept for debunking the various accusations made towards me by Dem operatives who I hired before the 2020 primary and replaced after winning it.

It took 2 months after @akela_lacy’s inaccurate hit piece in July. theintercept.com/2020/09/25/sha… /2
Even after publishing a second story, and revising each of its articles after publication to correct various inaccuracies, @theintercept continued to indulge the orchestrated network that smeared me, misled voters, attacked the 2020 election, and *continues* to spread lies. /3

Several journalists wrote hit pieces in 2020 that protected the Democratic establishment from the strongest challenge Pelosi has ever faced.

Each story suppressed whistleblowers, and ignored evidence, to ultimately publish election disinformation.

Truth deserves to be heard. /1
We now make public a memo explaining a litany of factual errors and ethical failures that we shared with @theintercept last summer. shahidforchange.us/correction-aug…

It prompted revisions to the story, then an entirely new one, but it took two months to investigate *after* publication. /2
Did any of the journalists acknowledge the confusion, entitlement, and presumption of their sources?

Their own voices reveal them. thisissomenoise.com/ep-30 /3

I went live on Instagram earlier today to explain my thoughts about the Squad and the debate over how @AOC & the Squad can best press for #MedicareforAll.

Thread. /1
Of course @Instagram blocked me from saving the live session to our story—for supposed copyright violations, of all things.

Yay corporate content moderation! Who needs censorship anymore?

But I digress.... /2
It’s entirely appropriate to press our elected allies in Congress to go to the mat for #MedicareForAll.

We each sought office to promote issues, not our careers.

But as supporters, we should recognize the landscape in which we—and they—are operating. /3

We’re grateful for all the support that made our 2020 campaign the most successful effort over the past 30 years to win San Francisco a new voice in Congress.

We’re excited to reflect on our momentum as we look ahead to 2022. Thread. /1
The 81,000 votes we won in the November 2020 general election were the most by any challenger to the sitting Speaker of the House in her 30 year career as a Member of Congress. sfelections.sfgov.org/november-3-202…

We exceeded the previous record by over 25%. /2
Over the past generation, only one candidate for federal office to emerge from San Francisco has received more votes than we did this month.

She is currently the Vice President-elect of the United States. /3

The corruption of this administration is rivaled only by its mendacity.

But don’t pretend that the problem is partisan.

How has Trump gotten away with such notorious serial fraud?

Democrats—led by @SpeakerPelosi—have played a key role enabling him. Thread. /1
Executive accountability:

Pelosi refused to allow corruption to be included in the Articles of Impeachment that she delayed for a year before finally proceeding—with a process limited to a single charge, which happened to be least likely to sway Senate votes. /2
Pelosi’s decisions left issues on the table from 1️⃣human rights abuses to 2️⃣inciting violence, in addition to 3️⃣Trump’s corruption, even before 4️⃣his prolific acts driving hundreds of thousands of Americans into early graves.

Pelosi gave Trump a free pass for *all* of this. /3

I grew up in rural Missouri, as part of the only immigrant family within 11 miles in any direction—but the worst racism I’ve ever encountered was in 2020, right here in the proud progressive bastion of San Francisco. Thread. /1
The institutional racism & Islamophobia that our campaign has encountered from the San Francisco press—and even self-described progressives and socialists—has been alarming to me. Sadly, it has longstanding roots. /2
“Progressive” clubs acted on accusations ultimately *proven* to be false. theintercept.com/2020/09/25/sha…

Racism emerges whenever decision-making bodies ignore facts to condemn people of color when falsely accused. The same dynamic pervades the criminal justice system. /3
