El laboratorio de División Celular, liderado por el investigador @icreacommunity Cayetano Gonzalez, comparó tumores cerebrales en moscas del vinagre, #Drosophila melanogaster, macho y hembra y observó que los tumores eran mas agresivos en los machos. Image
A continuación, compararon las células tumorales de machos y hembras e identificaron numerosas proteínas cuyos niveles eran mucho más abundantes en las células tumorales de machos. Varias de estas proteínas también están presentes en humanos. Image
Se centraron en la proteína Phf7, que está presente en células tumorales de moscas macho, donde el tumor es más agresivo, y ausente en células tumorales de hembras. Al eliminar Phf7 en machos, se reducía la agresividad del tumor, llegando a niveles similares a los de las hembras. Image
Los resultados muestran que se pueden regular las proteínas responsables de las diferencias en tumores entre machos y hembras para reducir el grado de malignidad que está asociado al sexo del individuo afectado.
Comprender las bases moleculares de las diferencias en incidencia y supervivencia al cáncer entre hombres y mujeres es importante para encontrar tratamientos específicos y más efectivos

@IRBBarcelona coordinates the European Project Evomet to train 15 young scientists and future leaders in metastasis research with the aim to identify therapeutic solutions. The project has received €4 M and will last for four years.

Each of the institutions will host one of the selected young researchers and will train them until they complete their doctorate, except for @IRBBarcelona and @idibell_cat IDIBELL, which will host two predoctoral researchers each.
