Labour's Electoral Battleground - Thread. (1/12)

So, as some of you already know, I have been compiling this spreadsheet. It currently covers Labour's top 90 TARGETS, and top 25 DEFENCES. Pay attention, now! 😉

#SocialistSunday #RespecttheVote
#SundayMorning
#SundayMotivation
I have matched all constituencies with their equivalent 2016 referendum counting areas, be they actual constituencies, districts, metropolitan districts, unitary authorities, boroughs, Welsh Assembly Seats or Scottish Highlands and Islands districts. (2/12)
I do not pretend that this is a perfect match, but it is the nearest available. Even ward numbers are only available in about 15% of counting areas, many in Greater London, so the effort required for a closer match is simply not worth it. (3/12)
These caveats in no way negate what I am about to show.

There are 52 LEAVE constituencies, and 38 REMAIN in Labour's top 90 TARGETS. 25 of these are Scottish seats, only 1 of which is Conservative, the rest SNP. ALL THE 52 LEAVE CONSTITUENCIES ARE IN ENGLAND & WALES. (4/12)
THERE ARE ONLY 14 REMAIN CONSTITUENCIES IN LABOUR'S TOP 66 ENGLISH & WELSH TARGET SEATS.

The total voting numbers for the counting areas of the top 90 LTS, INCLUDING SCOTLAND, are 4,148,136 LEAVE, 3,971,410 REMAIN. Reminder: all of the 25 Scottish seats voted remain. (5/12)
It is clear that there is a HUGE majority for leave in the English & Welsh LTS.

Labour GAINED 30 seats in the 2017 G.E. Political casualties have accounted for a loss of 15 seats, leaving a net 247 seats. Labour need 79 GAINS for a simple majority. (6/12)
Labour's 25 most difficult Defences include FOUR of those political casualties, nos.: 2 - Dudley North, 6 - Barrow & Furness, 14 - Peterborough, and 25 - Sheffield Hallam.

SHEFFIELD HALLAM IS THE ONLY LIBDEM TARGET SEAT IN EITHER LIST. NB. (7/12)
There are 17 LEAVE constituencies, and 8 REMAIN in Labour's top 25 DEFENCES. 5 of these are Scottish seats, the SNP. ALL THE 17 LEAVE CONSTITUENCIES ARE IN ENGLAND & WALES.

THERE ARE ONLY 3 REMAIN CONSTITUENCIES IN LABOUR'S TOP 20 ENGLISH & WELSH DEFENCE SEATS.(8/12)
The total voting numbers for the counting areas of the most difficult 25 LDS, INCLUDING SCOTLAND, are 1,663,816 LEAVE, 1,580,577 REMAIN. Reminder: all of the 25 Scottish seats voted remain.

It is clear that there is a HUGE majority for leave in the English & Welsh LDS. (9/12)
The Conservatives, while having political casualties themselves, ALSO need 15 of Labour's most difficult Defence Seats to form a majority themselves. The Conservatives are wisely occupying a LEAVE position, and still retain enough infrastructure to get their vote out. (10/12)
It ought to be noted that most English and Welsh Conservative associations are very strongly LEAVE. The major worry that Labour face, is getting their own leave vote out. The indications from both the Local and the Euro elections, is that they are sitting on their hands. (11/12)
It is therefore of the utmost importance that, AT A BARE MINIMUM, @jeremycorbyn 's position receives the strongest possible support at Conference this week. The Shadow Cabinet NEEDS to be faced down. If possible, a pledge to campaign for LEAVE should be made. (Ends 12/12)
@Hepworthclare FYI. 😊🌹✊🏻👍🏻
@PeoplesMomentum Somebody needs to mark @jonlansman 's card. Urgently. 😒
@unisontweets Somebody in your office really needs to read and understand this. Urgently. 😒

Today's THE LONG READ:

Can PR save democracy?

"In the ERS’s analysis of different PR systems, the winner in every case was the minor party ..."

What was the really remarkable thing about the 2017 Election?

Was it Corbyn ? I suggest not - although he WAS clearly the catalyst ...

Was it Twitter ? Perhaps, although possibly not in the way that you imagine.

What was really, really remarkable, was the NUMBER OF ACTIVISTS.
BOOTS ON THE GROUND.

TWEETERS ON TWITTER.

THIS is the LESSON that is also remarkable, in that it is almost always FORGOTTEN. 😒

And it is also why the left are so crap at elections.

This was also the lesson of #BatleyandSpen

Forget it, at your peril ... 😒

FOA @ScouseSocialis2 , & anybody else: Every trade unionist, anti-cuts campaigner, community activist and all those who want to see an alternative to austerity politicians can become a TUSC candidate. But voters should know that any councillor elected under the TUSC banner will:
(1) Oppose all cuts and closures to council services, jobs, pay and conditions. We reject the claim that 'some cuts' are necessary to our services or that the Covid crisis is a reason for austerity.
(2) Support all workers' struggles against government policies making ordinary people pay for the crisis.

(3) Fight for united working class struggle against racism and all forms of oppression.

Will the left ever again espouse self determination, as they did in the days of Peter Shore, Michael Foot, and the great Tony Benn?

Or will they forever whine on, about how the neoliberal, neo-colonial, fascist EU needs to save them from themselves? (1/2)
The answer to this question is fundamental to the prospects of there ever again being a Left Government. Because, while the middle class "left" moans about this or that problem with Brexit, the working class are being killed off by the Establishment. (2/3)
Eventually, the working class will probably just ignore all elections, and that will mean Tory hegemony until the end of time. Is that what the middle class really want? Will that allow them a life of easeful comfort?

OK, listen up, please? 😊 Here follows a thread - please read all of it. (1/11)

You are all aware that I, and others, have been stewarding this:

#ScrapNHSBill

Petition: Protect the #NHS , Press Pause on the White Paper for Health and Social care:

petition.parliament.uk/petitions/5810…
So, we got to the 10,000 eventually, which forces a response from the Government.

The response was puerile, facile and lied as well, particularly about the so-called "consultation". 😒

So we pressed on. (2/11)
In the meantime, various other similar campaigns were gathering momentum: (3/11)

Health Secretary Sajid Javid: Protect the NHS: Stop the health and care bill - Sign the Petition! chng.it/4qqxySFP via @UKChange

Everybody who sees themselves as being left, should be made to reflect on two simple, but intensely germane, facts about the Labour Party.
1.) But it was not to be. Council Labour Groups were strongholds of the right-wing. Out of more than 7,000 Labour councillors only 400 or so had supported Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership bid. (@TUSCoalition , No Cuts Peoples' Budget)
2.)

Cand. ______ Members _ Reg. Sup. _ Aff. Sup. _ Total
_______________Vs _ % ____ Vs _ % ____ Vs _ % ____ Vs _ %
Starmer _ 225,135/56.1% _ 10,228/76.6% _ 40,417/53.1% _ 275,780/56.2%

275,780!!!

Turnout: 62.6 per cent. 490,731 returned ballots, from 784,181 eligible voters.
